Water leak

Post by GunnyMack »

So this past Friday as I was loading my shooting stuff into truck for the weekend match I went into the basement to grab my ammo box and found a puddle on the floor in front of my safe.
I thought that maybe Parker had peed on the floor, but as I cleaned it up it had no odor. I raised my safe up on 1/4" aluminum and set up a fan to dry up what was under the safe.
This morning I went downstairs to check things and more water on the floor.
I found a pinhole at a 90°, went and got a few sharkbite fittings and fixed it... then I turned the water back on to find another pin hole.
Had to pull bathroom vanity out, cut sheetrock out and was lucky enough my plumber buddy wasn't far away so he came by and ran some PEX .
So much for my planned easy day!

A water softener (ion exchange) malfunction or is it an RO (reverse osmosis) water system?

Check with the water company. They may cut you some slack if it was a damaged part and you proved you had it fixed.

One of the best things I ever did was set up the burglar alarm so when it is armed the water is shut off to the inside of the house (hoses still on for firefighting and garden watering). At least that helps prevent the catastrophic damage I've seen people have when a big pipe burst during a 20-minute errand.

You should see what happens when the water runs for a week or two! I've had water loss claims into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Amazing what 100,000 gallons of water can do! :D

Glad you got it fixed before it got worse!

From a water treatment professional, the key word here is culligan. I will not have anything to do with their systems. If a customer insists on culligan I walk away.

The system was already installed when we bought the place. The water here is atrocious. Is there a system you suggest?

Not in your state. But, you'd be better served, though it costs more, to go with a bottle exchange service. This way you don't have any regeneration system to worry about malfunctioning.

Oh, avoid the whole house unit like life source. These are carbon bed filters that "remove contaminants". They also remove any chlorination but don't stop virus' or bacteria. So the bugs get right through and you have no disinfectant to keep them in check. The upshot can be a toxic water system in the house. This can and has led to some pretty sick folks.

Reverse Osmosis will remove all the bacteria and virus from your water.
Britta makes your water taste good, but you would be shocked at the germs that live in that filter after just a short use. BTW, chlorine doesn't actually kill germs, but merely prevents them from reproducing, which is a good thing. CL2 and backflow assemblies have saved more lives than almost anything else vis-a-vis clean drinking water.
