Rossi .44 Magnum carbine (stainless)
Hello folks, this is my first post.
Well I have three lever guns. A Marlin 336 Texan, Marlin (Rimlin) 45/70, and just today got a Rossi 92 16 inch stainless .44.
Well about that .44!
Now it shoots about 5 inches high at 25 yards. No biggie since I dug up a Winchester 94 rear sight that has a lower elevator.
But I noticed two threaded holes in the barrel at the 'rear' of the rear sight! They about about 1/2 inch apart. What were they for?
Also about that dang safety on the bolt. Can one add a stiffer spring to the ball indent so it is very hard to move (it is way to easy right now.)
It shoot fine except in height. Groups well. And so far jam free.
Any thoughts on what those two holes are for and how to stiffen the safety would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Deaf

Many of the Rossi rifles have those holes in them from the factory, mine does. There may be a scope rail available to fit. I am sure someone will be on shortly with some real info on this.

Welcome to the forum, if you have been reading here you know there is a fine bunch here. I have had a Rossi .357 SRC for several years, I put a Williams 5D receiver sight on it. A forum member, Steve Young is the Rossi expert. He makes a plug to take the place of that safety switch. Look up Steve's Guns, he goes by Nate Kiowa Jones on here.

Re: Rossi .44 Magnum carbine (stainless)
Thanks. I've seen Steve's website. Seen is plug for the safety's hole and the aperture sight. But if I take the safety off will it, uh, freak out lawyers?
Oh, and is the half cock notch strong enough not to break if it is stuck? I remember long time ago in Outdoor Life a guy in Canada had his Marlin 30/30 slide down a rock and fire after hitting the hammer. The 30/30 slug took off one of his arms!
Now that 5D sight, will drilling and tapping on the receiver near the locking lugs weaken the action?
Thanks,
Deaf

I ain't a lawyer so don't take this as the gospel but I would wonder why you would show it to a lawyer. In the first the place I don't imagine a lawyer would know the difference if one did see your rifle with out the idiot safety plug in the rifle. Also Steve would not be making and selling them if they were illegal. About the strength of the action I would not worry, there are quite a few members here that have done their new Rossi that way and none of them are in jail and their rifles have not failed them.

Re: Rossi .44 Magnum carbine (stainless)
There are actually four holes (2 under sight) and Rossi does sell a Scout Scope mount to fit those carbine.
Even if you have to use a taller front consider the Marbles 'Bullseye' sight as an option....see my ' sight options' post:

Also....here is a thread on mounting the Williams FP (or 5D) on a Rossi....if I can do it, anyone can....!

I got a Puma in '94 and love it. I removed the safety and installed a plug, but ain't no lawyers been to my house to check it out (and the first 15 years I had it I lived in CA!). Jes a couple thoughts; slug the barrel if you plan on shooting lead bullets as I've read groove diameters on Rossi 44 barrels run large, mine is .431"-.432". I too had problems with the rear sight and with my poor eyesight I tried a few different remedies. I tried a "Bullseye" rear sight, no good for me. I tried a different shape rear sight, nope. I went with a Williams receiver sight and a taller front sight and now I can hit a barn door at 25' I found Ranch Dog designed mold for a 265 gr RNFP and it feeds quite well and is accurate...

Welcome aboard, Deaf! Texas, right?
Are the two holes you mentioned on the sight blade itself? If so, maybe the leaf is missing.
I think that safety is more for the manufacturer than it is for us. Liability and all that...

Re: Rossi .44 Magnum carbine (stainless)
Ok, here is my take on the safety... that safety is so easy to move it is too easy. I can see it come 'on' or 'off' in the brush thus (and I have owned lever guns from since I was 16 and pump Winchester '03 since 15!) it is a actual danger. If one carries it fully loaded (chamber loaded) and it that safety comes off then it can fire if the hammer is stuck. And that is what I'll tell any lawyer that claims I made the gun less safe by disabling it.
Thus I will get that 'plug' and make it work just like my Marlin Texan 30/30.
As for the sights, I'll check them out.
And yes I'm a Texican. Born and raised it Texas. 'Deef' Smith, of Texas Independence fame, is my hero and so is Skeeter Skelton (sheriff of Deaf Smith county for many years.)

Glad to hear you're going to go ahead and fix that unsafe safety. When I had the Williams 5D put on my rifle it shot just fine with the factory front sight. some folks have to change their front sight and some don't. Shoot it and then see what you have to do.

Re: Rossi .44 Magnum carbine (stainless)
Deaf,
Welcome to the fire. If your gun has the D&T-ed holes under the rear sight it is one of the late molded from about 2010 on. At one time Rossi offered a weaver rail for a scout scope. that rail fits those holes. They still D&T the barrels but haven't had the rail for several years.
Someone mentioned the oversized bore of the 44mag. That was a problem back in the mid 2000's. But the current guns are good.
As for the sights and shooting high. shooting too high is pretty common with the Rossi 92’s particularly the round barrel carbines in 44 and 45. This is mainly because Rossi tries to do a one size fits all and the rear sight that comes on it is just too tall.
if you want to kill two birds with one stone, order my
Adjustable Bolt-Mounted Peep Sight Safety Replacement
It will work with your current front sight.

Re: Rossi .44 Magnum carbine (stainless)
Steve,
I might take you up on that. Just came back from the range. I shot the group you are seeing at 25 yards just leaning on a fence post while standing up.I used 7 rounds of Federal 240 gr JHPs and three Federal 'cast core' factory loads (the two holes that are to the right and a bit above are two of them. I guess the gun shoots a bit to the right with that cast core load.)
Now you notice it shoot dead on. Well I had a Winchester elevator and I replaced the Rossi one with it.. Low and behold it shot dead on!
Now I also noticed the sights are directly in line with the safety on the bolt. Thus I bet a peep on that bolt will shoot dead on to. Might even be able to lower the front sight at the same time (I like 'em low.)
The other two guns are my Marlin (Rimlin) 45/70 and my old Marlin Texan 30/30. Just shows how short that Rossi is.

Welcome to the forum. I've been looking for one of those Rossi's for a while myself.
