Why not? The current paper and coin money is not backed by the US government. Heck, it isn't even printed or issued by them.

If I had enough money to have good and silver sitting around I wouldn't put it in a bank. Feds have seized privately held previous metals (out of safe deposit boxes) before, nothing stopping them from doing it again if it's held in a bank.
It's a moot point as I'm a poor man who works hard for his money. I invest in brass, copper and lead instead.
