Another AR, Retro Style

Post by 2ndovc »

Just finished putting this one together. These things are kind of addictive. I picked up the upper half at a show last weekend. I had one of these before, but haven't seen the guy in some time. The lower is a Stag Arms with mostly their parts and a Hyperfire EDT trigger kit. I really like these triggers and bought a couple while they were on sale a few months ago.

:D

Yep, they sure are....

....kinda like leverguns - once you have a 44 Mag, you 'need' a 357 Mag as its little brother, then you realize you need a 'trapper' model to go with your 20-incher, but then what about a 24" octagonal... . ...then gosh, I need a 32-20, and since I'm getting into the 'real' hyphenated-cartridges, I'd better keep the eyes open for a 44-40 and 30-30, and 45-70. But of course the 35 Remington is kind of unique, and I'd better get one of those as a 'bigger' 35 caliber to go with the 357 Mag. But then - I don't have anything between 35 caliber and 44 caliber - Oh My....!!! I guess a 375 Win will fill the bill there....but maybe a 38-55 instead....decisions, decisions.....guess I'll need both....

One thing AR's can do that leverguns don't do well, is cause Snowflakes to wet their pants, and lately that's become somewhat of a hobby of mine. I like to show them an ordinary bolt-action rifle in 30-06, or a levergun in 45-70, and see them accept that it's a "hunting" gun, and that somehow that is ok - then I show them an AR (or 10/22 :D ) with 'all those sticky-outy things' and let them muse about how much more powerful it is than those hunting rifles. Then I show them the 30-06 Springfield or 45-70 cartridge and the 223 Remington cartridge, and lead them to the shocking realization that the AR is chambered in the latter. "....oh, didn't you know that...?....see the military realized that it is way more useful to wound rather than kill, in terms of the morale and logistics effect on the enemy, plus the smaller cartridge is far easier to train recruits with....imagine how much more deadly these 'mass shootings' would be if the shooter were using a HUNTING rifle..."

Sometimes it educates them a bit, but so many of that generation are so clueless I really wonder how they manage to dress themselves in the morning, much less hold down a job or pass any classes they take.

When I've said your on a roll....well.....the roll has been supercharged! Your smokin'!

Retro? Almost...I'd say it is faux retro...you need to get rid of that removable handle, forward assist, that thing-a-ma-jig on the end of the barrel, and is that a 30 rd. Mag?...and I also need to see the twist on the rifling, ---6--- :D

Dude, I said "style" not exact replica. :D I like the ridiculously long flash hider and that's an old Colt 20 rnd. magazine I've had forever.

Just something to do on a cold afternoon. Make loud, obnoxious things. :D

Other than that funny looking thingy on the side, the weird bulge that the empties hit to keep them from hitting you, and the flash hider, it looks like what I trained on in Basic/OSUT. Yes, we had 1 M16 that was not an A1 in my company in Basic. It got assigned to me. Everyone else had M16A1s. Got to Ft. Bragg and we received the M16A2s and then the Beretta slide crackers. I got put on the M60, so I didn't get much time on the M16A2. I preferred the accuracy and reliability of the old 1911s to the Beretta. At least the 1911 didn't throw pieces at you. OK, so they fixed the Beretta after a few of us got scars. My glasses caught the chunk of slide and the scar is hard to see. The Clark Kents were good for something.

Speaking of retro, Chris Bartocci does a fine job here discussing the original M-16 and the lessons learned soon after its introduction in Vietnam in 1965.

I wonder if anyone makes a slick sided upper so you could make one like the original piece of pelosi.

Jeep, one of the makers used to offer a budget AR without the forward assist. Trying to recall which one.

S&W did on their first AR. It wasn't selling well with that and the dust cover missing so now they have the M&P II.
Someone else did it that way too and ended up changing it as well. Don't remember for sure but it may have been Colt with their lower end model.

I figure if I could find a slick sided one I could hang it on the wall and fling invectives at it when I'm in a bad mood. That's about all the originals were good for.
