Anybody like IMR 4227
for .357 magnum?
I noticed quite a few loads with this powder, what's it like? Accuracy, clean burning, does it fill the case, etc.

12 Gr./IMR-4227 with a 158 Gr. LFN works great in my Rossi 92. I haven't shot anything bigger than a woodchuck with it but it's an accurate load.

Any idea what kind of velocity you're getting with that charge?

I have used it in .357 mag (now I use either Unique for low-end loads or L'ilGun for high end loads), .44 Mag (now Unique and H110) and .38-55 with the Lyman 375249 for a good light BP velocity level load.

What cartridges do you load?bronyaur wrote:A friend gave me three pounds of IMR4227 and I have no use for it. I don't know the rules for shipping the stuff but If I can ship it I'd like to get rid of it for the price of shipping. I don't know what else to do with it.

I load the .348 Win, .280 Rem, and .300 Wby Mag. I have a Rossi .357 and a Dan Wesson 15-2VH .357 but I just don't shoot them enough to bother loading them.Hobie wrote:What cartridges do you load?bronyaur wrote:A friend gave me three pounds of IMR4227 and I have no use for it. Maddog521 - sorry but I live in N. Kalifornia. If I can find a way to get it from my house in Napa to otteray in Monterey it's his (PM sent).

The Lee manual lists a compressed load of 15.8gr of IMR4227 with a 158gr lead bullet in the 357, and a 15.3gr compressed load with 158gr jacketed.
Thats over 1300 reloads you could make with those 3 pounds of powder.

My chrono is defunct, but I looked back in my notes and found that before it died I was getting an average of 1230 fps out of a 4" Ruger Security Six.J Miller wrote:Pisgah,Pisgah wrote:I have used 16 to 17 gr. of IMR 4227 and a 158 Gr. bullet (jacketed or cast) as my standard .357 load for years. I'm pretty certain now that it cannot be shipped by individuals that aren't hazmat certified. Bummer.bronyaur wrote:I load the .348 Win, .280 Rem, and .300 Wby Mag. Time to go to Plan B. Maybe I can see if the little woman wants to go on a romantic "Wine Country Tour" in Napa Valley sometime this year...

bronyaur
PM'd you, but it seems stuck in the outbox.
I'm at our pad at Lake Tahoe and am leaving for Santa Cruz in a few minutes.
I'll see if your PM gets delivered to you, in a few hours.
It's been what, half a year?! Thanks for remembering.

Re: Anybody like IMR 4227
4227 makes a fine powder for sixgun rounds from .357 to 45 Colt. It is a little slow for top velocities, but will non-the-less do very well. Good accuracy usualy results. For a cleaner burn use a stout crimp and a tightly seated bullet with a hefty pull.
4227 is also a fine powder in small rifle rounds and in larger rounds, when used for cast bullet loads.
All in all, a very good and useful powder.

Re: Anybody like IMR 4227
charles, how about a mag primer to decrease those unburned kernells? jd45
Re: Anybody like IMR 4227
I use it in my 32/40 alot. Experiments very little with it in my Rossi 357 but the gun did not seem to like it.
Otterray,
It'll stay in the out box until he opens it & then it goes to the sent box.

Re: Anybody like IMR 4227
If you examine closely the load tables by Hodgdon for 357 mag in rifles
you will find that for all bullet weights up to that IMR 4227 provides
the 2nd highest velocities behind the H-110 powder which ranks first.
IMR 4227 is slightly slower burning and quite a bit less dense
than the H-110 number one ranked powder.
IMR 4227 density = 13.004
H-110 = density = 15.256
There may be some other application what would show the IMR 4227 performance
to be higher or the highest option, I only studied the 357mag closely.

IMR 4227 is an excellent powder. It's burn rate is pretty much identical with 5744. I use the two powders interchangeably for the same load. I use it for small to medium capacity, straight-walled cartridges that were originally black powder cartridges. Has a lower pressure spike than ffg for the same velocity.

Re: Anybody like IMR 4227
I have an older Hornady book that I was brousing through. I found it interesting that for almost every round, and I mean every round, there is the normal load listings for jacketed bullets and then for cast bullet loads there is a load listing for IMR 4227. As I understand the power curve, 4227 has a slower push rather than a snap at the start of the curve. This is why it works so well with cast.

That's very interesting! I never related it to 5744, one of my favorites for my bp cartridge rifles.KirkD wrote:IMR 4227 is an excellent powder. It's burn rate is pretty much identical with 5744. Maybe I should consider using it in my Marlin 1889 38-40.

Re: Anybody like IMR 4227
bronyaur's wife and kids missed the 156 turn-off and still turned around to connect with me at "The Giant Artichoke" restaurant, in Castroville, Ca. on their way to Monterey.
We traded 3 lbs. of the IMR 4227 for one bottle of a nice Mendicino, CA Chardonnay ( my wife correctly pointed out that I better do at least that for his wife for going out of her way.)
Thanks again, bronyaur; hope your Utah hunting trip is a good one! You've got lots of good karma on your side!
