You're lookin' good Lenn. I'm feeling much better the last couple of days since I got to bring my 16 year old home for a few days. We cut, split and stacked a couple of ricks of slippery elm. Most folks don't know it's very good fire wood, especially stuff that dies on the stump and dries out for a few years before I harvest it. We had one big log that I would have had sawn but it was too split. Nice red wood though, a lot like mahogany. I'll show all this to the kid, he's just barely old enough to shave.

Good afternoon
What no K-Bar ???
Have only one razor any more. Had 3 but two now reside with some one else. But the one a Solingen blade I have shaved with several times . 1st time was to find out if I could without need stitches. Few nicks.. They do get in close.

It does take a light touch to shave with a straight edge. I tried it once a long time ago. I think I was holding the blade at the wrong angle and I cut myself a few times.

Pitchy, I have enjoyed your posts I started with a safety razor but went to the disposable's and my wife threw out my old Gillette
My Grandfather used to put his blades in a 8 oz glass and run them back and forth on his finger then flip them and do the other side to sharpen them.
Thanks fellars, kinda a collection thing going on as I don`t shave much just love the old stuff.

Thanks Jay, ok I got a couple scuttles today and tried whipping up a lather in one with no luck
I need help from someone that's used one before, the bowl has holes in the bottom and the lather goes down the holes.
I have one scuttle coming that doesn`t have holes in the bowl.
Here`s a picture, help

Silly me, I believe your supposed to put the puck in the bowl thus covering the holes, tried that and worked pretty good.
There`s the bowl or mug method no holes and the scuttle method holes.

Thanks Jay, I experimented more this morning and had good results.
Trick was loading the brush up really heavy with soap, the soft soap in the container then work up the lather in the scuttle.
Gotta try everything once.

Forgot to take a picture so whipped up another batch, I ordered some smaller pucks and will try them in the scuttle bowl next.

Pitchy, my father-in-law shaved using a mug and brush for as long as I knew him. I tried making the lather in the mug, too. My father-in-law told me I was doing it all wrong. He showed me his technique and it worked. Wet the brush with warm water, then rub it around the soap in the mug to get soap on the brush. He would rub it quickly on his face using a circular motion. You can lather up as much or as little as you want. It doesn't take a whole lot of lather to allow you a good shave. I used this technique with safety razors and straight razors and it worked great and left less to clean up in the shaving mug and uses a whole lot less of the soap. Rgates

Thanks, I`m not shaving anyway, or not much I`m just experimenting to see how it was done in a scuttle.
If I get old things I like to be able to use it the way it was intended to be used.
Thanks for the info I`ve read about doing it that way also.

Rgates that is the method ive used with bowl, mug or tin the last 25 years. Low mess. Works anywhere from a truck bed to a latrine, as long as you have some water.

Gad, Lenn, I have learned more about shaving this morning revisiting this thread than have over the past 64-plus years!
I think you should consider going to a moustache and goatee, which leaves some beard, but also room to play with your shaving museum.

Ok here`s todays plunder, a real nice Valet razor with a beautiful box and a scuttle that I have been waiting for with a deep bowl with no holes.
Now sticking too the theme of using a scuttle here`s a video using the Smith brothers, in this vid I`m using the soft soap in the tub because I don`t have a puck that will fit in the bowl of the scuttle.
I have some smaller pucks coming and will make another vid using one of those in the scuttle bowl.

I have come up with the perfect set-up for me, I melted down one of the soaps shown and poured it in the oldest scuttle.
With the small brush it makes a perfect scented lather which is just right for me and so far the King oscillator shaves best.

Hey Lenn, maybe you could get some volunteers for a shave if you offered to shave girls legs. I knew a barber once who would offer to shave the legs of any girl who came in his shop.

Seeing the "Smith Brothers" mark on the bottom of that scuttle reminded me of Smith Brothers cough drops -- but the brothers on the box both had full beards if I recall correctly!
