"Use Enough Gun" -- Or Else...
Here's an interesting period story -- learned too late by one poor soul -- about the admonition to always:

Note that Mr. Bruin was not on the ground with Mr. Tollomie.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Sounds like there’s also a lesson in there about powder storage and COAL!
More meplat, more better.
Re: "Use Enough Gun" -- Or Else...
COAL does seem to have been one of the major factors in causing a jam. Tollomie might have been experienced, but he learned his last lesson the hard way.

Reckon he didn't have any of those Gummy tips, some Remington 170 grain Core Lokt rounds might have helped the man.

Technology changes so much - just think if he even had a Glock 10mm..... Not what you'd necessarily take 'bear hunting', but it is more powerful than what he was using, fires faster, holds at least twice as many rounds, and is probably less likely to jam when fired emergently.

Re: "Use Enough Gun" -- Or Else...
But this poor fellow had a big bore! What he lacked was enough powder, or was it too much powder that did him in?
I wonder how it would have ended had there been no jamming.
Interesting how well regarded was the .303 Savage. Whelen felt it was the best of the "deer" cartridges circa WW-I, but he didn't put it in the big bear category.

Yep. If he'd just had a 303 Savage that old silvertip woulda' been toast.

Re: "Use Enough Gun" -- Or Else...
I decided to go back to the source and found my recollection was correct. However, in the section devoted to the .303 Savage, he did note there were hunters then who used it on the biggest game, so the praise by the author "St. Croix" above was not unheard of. In the same section are comments on bullet and groove diameters, and SAAMI specs today match this.

The poor old Indian was probably using a very, very early prototype Marlin rifle that was not intended to be put into production until the 1990's that used sintered metal for internal parts.
I have a similar story in an old book where the hunter had his scalp ripped off after shooting a grizz with a 401. I'll see if I can dig it out.---6

Re: "Use Enough Gun" -- Or Else...
The Athabascan native hunters in the far north used single shot Winchesters in 45-90
or other rifle/cartridge combinations. The old saying that what you have in your hands
will be one's "bear rifle"-when the time comes-is true.
This Canadian tale seems to have been related near the turn of the early 1900s. In the 1895 Winchester.
calibers ranged from the 30 Krag to 303 and even the 38-72. These were early -and some heavy- calibers that the 405 eventually replaced. The 1886 was
still being chambered in 45-70, 45-90 then the 33 WCF.
Used rifles were available, but the natives hunters made do with what they had. Creeping through the Alaskan-Canadian bush
was good lever action fast-handling rifle country.
Some of us old timers still do it with Model 71s and 1895-86 Winchesters and Marlins.
William Wright in "The Grizzly Bear" told of hunting grizzlies in the Selkirks. After a close call
with an 1873 in 44 WCF-he switched to an 1885 SS in 45-100.

Re: "Use Enough Gun" -- Or Else...
A badly reloaded cartridge is not the fault of Winchester's .44WCF cartridge or the rifle? We have no evidence he even hit the bear, (or was shooting at it) with those shots. History does not relate.
HIs .44 would have been an 1873 rifle I expect. With blackpowder and cast bullets you have to be careful to compress the powder enough so the bullet is not seated out too far, and jams the elevator. I know exactly how that indian messed up. I have done it too. The '92 is more forgiving. At this period the progressives were inclined to write about the .44-40 as being obsolete, and this article is typical of the time despite (or probably because of) so many people still using them, and the 1892 still being a best seller.
But I would take a .44-40 200 grain bullet at 1300 fps over a 10mm auto...

Re: "Use Enough Gun" -- Or Else...
If the cartridges were loaded properly, I would go for the levergun in .44-40 over a handgun in 10mm also. Just for the simple reason that I am better with a long fun than a pistol when under stress. Having a Grizzly charging with the intent of causing grievous bodily harm would put me under stress. Perhaps it would not be enough to cause me to freeze, but it would certainly be stressful.

I have some experience hunting large animals that can kill you.
Neither I, nor anyone I have hunted with in those places takes a round into the field that has not been cycled through the rifle without showing any "issues".
