Shaving the old way.
Some here can probably relate, been collecting some late 1800`s early 1900`s shaving equipment and will add as I get more.

Been shaving the old way for most of my shaving life Pitchy! Can't imagine not using a mug and a brush. When I travel I end up using canned shave cream and hate the stuff!

Cool stuff, Lenn. Very nice shape too. I just like old stuff. It's hard to imagine stuff being made with that kind if care and quality today.

Re: Shaving the old way.
Thanks guys, I have some more stuff coming and will make a video too.
I don`t shave anymore but like the old stuff also, one of those razors is a King oscillator made in MPLS.

I never had the guts to try a straight razor. Started out with a Schick injector. Now I use Harry's with those four blades of German steel. Works fine but not nearly so cool as your loot, Lenn.
Re: Shaving the old way.
I`ve never tried a straight razor either Bill I do have a new one coming.

My Dad grew up when shaving with a straight razor, was the only way you shaved. He did it occasionally, and I have his stuff, I believe his Dad's before him. I've never shaved myself this way, but do like to have a good shave when visiting a barber that's skilled at it.

Re: Shaving the old way.
Thanks fellars, wait until ya see how the King oscillator works, had to buy two as the first one came with no blades and ya can`t find any anywhere.
The second one won`t be here until later next week, also have another different type blade sharpener coming.
What amazed me was I got out a old bottle of Old Spice cologne I`ve had for years the white glass bottle with the ship on it, they sell for 20 bucks or more on ebay.

Re: Shaving the old way.
That King Oscillator scares me to death just thinking about it.
I gave up on the stupidly (for the buyer, not the seller!) high priced 2, 3, 4, or even 5 blade razor inserts and graduated back to a regular safety razor years ago.
Never looked back. Been buying a 100 count package of the Astra double edge blade for $10; wifey gets the Col Conk cakes of shaving soap (she likes the smell) and got a Cabelas cup they fit in.
Need to replace my shaving brush, got a crack in it but it's still holding together.
So saying, I'm in awe of the old school guys that can use a straight razor. Don't think I have the hands or the eyes anymore for me to use.

I got some of those old blades too!
Tried selling this stuff, but usually all I get is guys asking questions, and not knowing Marlin was such a prolific razor blade supplier!

Re: Shaving the old way.
These found their way to me via old boxes of stuff I ended up with. They are pretty old. Perhaps WWI-ish or before. I shave my head, but not with these. I love to keep all my blood. All stropped up, they draw blood really easy. Just a touch on a finger.

I have no idea I noticed that too, maybe it`s a notch like in a pistol grip from the poor guy that got his throat cut.

It was used hook on your pocket to open when carried for other than shaving. I can remember several men that carried them instead of a pistol.

Re: Shaving the old way.
It's a fairly common feature referred to as a "Barber's Notch".
It's there to assist in getting lining up a "sight picture" for precision hairline cuts using the toe of the razor.

I have an antique straight razor which was my Grandfather's.
My Dad bought a Rolls Razor while in the Air Force in the early 50s. It is a straight razor with a handle which holds it perpendicular to the blade. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolls_Razor

Re: Shaving the old way.
That blade sharpener is quite a neat idea. Back when it was hard to find blades, such as in the first half of the 1900s, it would have probably been a necessity in some more rural places.

Re: Shaving the old way.
I remember that during WWII that a lot of stuff was hard to get and rationed but I don't recall about razor blades. I know double edged blades was how most guys shaved then but does anyone remember about the availability of razor blades? I would think that the high carbon steel needed to make the blades would be much in demand for lots of other machinery.

Re: Shaving the old way.
If you look at the top image I posted of the Marlin blades I own, you'll notice a piece that reads "blade sharpener" in the drawer pictured. Marlin sold those sharpeners specifically for people who wanted to make their double edge safety razor blades last longer. And they worked extremely well! Just bend the blade slightly, and push it through the sharpener end to end. Pull it out the other side, and turn it over to sharpen the other side. One or two times through and your blade was ready for more shaves!
