Doin' some shooin'

Post by OldWin »

It was 21 below this morning, so being the wussy I am I waited a while before hitting the trail. Did a couple miles up to our lot laying in some "floats" before the snow gets really deep. It was good going and a pretty day in the woods.
Took one of my favorite shooin' guns. A 94 Trapper in 44 with an XS peep. Has my favorite sling, the old M1/M14 cotton canvas. Its light, quiet, quick to adjust, and stays put on my wool jacket.

I'm envious, since moving to the south of England I rarely get to enjoy the woods all covered in snow, this week we had a fair covering and I'm down with a bug.
I like your traditional hunting clothing and rifle too, just looks right for where you are.

Great levergun! My 94 Wrangler in 32 special is one of my favorites to go snowshoeing with. I had 20 below on tuesday and then sent it your way, good to see that you are enjoying it.

Wow, and I was complaining about the -3 yesterday! :D
It was a tropical 16 degrees this afternoon. Spent the last two days writing an estimate on a house fire, was happy to get some heat going today in part of the house. Would have much rather been wandering around the woods!

Thanks guys!
That 44 is the only post 64 I own. It's an angle eject but no cross bolt. It ain't nothin special but it shoots good and is great for snowshoeing. I still have to convert it to half cock but need parts.

Very impressive, I used to love my time in the woods during the winter. Spent two weeks in Alaska on skis in Jan one year for a training mission learned what cold was on that trip. Enjoy the silence.

Thanks again, guys.
Wish you'd of been here too, Lenn! We could have
"Boiled up" and had a coffee!

Hope you feel better Gamekeeper. I had a little crud last week but bounced back pretty quick.

Paladin,
My son was in Alaska for almost 4 years and loved it. He said it was like a whole planet of Maine on steroids....sounds good to me!
And yes, the woods in winter and cold is intensely quiet. Just the trees popping from cold.

Griff,
Good choice! If you don't want cold, stay out of Pitchy's part of the country . Crazy cold there.

OldWin I'm so envious. What I miss most about Maine was the winters. It was 22 here last night and we woke up to 1+" of snow, not the same. I loved the woods at 20 below. The absolute silence except for the trees creaking and groaning, the sound of the snow underfoot and the crystal clear air, the night sky filled with stars and the northern lights. The cold was a physical adversary to overcome and I enjoyed the challenge. Probably no surprise, I always enjoyed Robert Service's poems and stories.

You seem to "have it" Hawkeye. We have 2 feet or so on the ground now. A good start I guess. I'm sure up north there is considerably more.
I can't say there are many places I'd rather be.

Snow! Nice to visit but I don't want to live in it.

The temps here have literally been all over the scale. Last week I got out of my truck in the San Joaquin Valley oil fields and it was twenty 26°F. This week we had the hottest temps in the US at 88°F in the San Fernando Valley. Given a choice, I'll that the 88°F.

Sorry you didn't make it up this year, Pete.

Jeepnik,
Now to me, you have to be WAY tougher to handle those kind of temperature swings. Oh, and 88 degrees?.....no thank you!
