I don't know the age.
From what I understand the LL Bean models were a special edition. I really like the hinged flip top on the vintage model. Much easier to light, no sliding or touching the glass.

Whatever came in that big grouse-engraved bottle intrigues me, too....

I don't know what originally came in the bottle.
What I do know:
My very talented grandfather hand engraved it back in the early 70's.

That candle lantern looks great. I don't know how cold it gets where you live, but I can see it being useful for power outages in the winter. It would help with the heat it puts out, as well as the light. Our winters in the Dallas area rarely have much bad weather. A couple of weeks where we might get ice or snow is about all. Usually around the time of the Ft. Worth Stock Show.

Re: Vintage LL Bean Alpine Candle Lantern. (UCO)
I have one I bought at Bean's in the early 80s and love it. I don't know how many hours it has on it but it's a favorite for camping. They give a lot of light, the candles seem to last forever and they are much safer than a lot of candle lanterns and oil lanterns. About 4 years ago I bought a couple more from the manufacturer along with the reflectors and top thingies and found the new models are nowhere as nice as the older ones like you have. I highly recommend the reflector like yours in the photo. In a small tent left burning all night they make a great nightlight, keep the air circulating and seem to reduce or eliminate condensation.

Does the glass chimney increase the available light over just a plain candle? I have several tea light "festive" lanterns that really don't produce much light.

it doesn't really increase the light, but helps the candle stay light in the wind.....
