Speakin' of moose......
Sat in my deer stand yesterday afternoon trying to stay warm. Heard a ruckus coming up behind me and had this big cow and a smallish bull come up under my stand. The cow strolled into my "kill zone" and hung out there. The bull was just as close but behind and below the stand. It was hard to get a pic through my "cover spruce". They hung out the rest of the afternoon so my deer huntin was kinda trashed. Moose make deer nervous. Boy, thats a pile o' good eatin right there!
Had to throw in a pic of my old 94 carbine, too!

On my bucket list, OldWin ...
Re: Speakin' of moose......
You know ole buddy, I know down deep that woolies and a Winchester carbine can't be beat for huntin the woods.
I do, however, have to prove it to myself once in a while by trying something else.
Nothing comes close. Most of us up here use woolies from Vermont, actually. The Johnson Woollen Mill co.

Hope you get to fill that bucket!
If you hunt moose in Maine, you're best off in northern most districts. Moose are bigger and somewhat easier to hunt.

After 20 years of paying (and losing) $20 per application, I gave up trying to win the Maine Moose lottery for a permit. (Non-resident's chances are somewhere between none and zero)
Too bad, so sad - as I usually see one near my Northern Piscataquis County deer stand(s) quite often.

I put in for years before I was drawn. Mostly cause I wanted district 14 and there were fewer permits with a bull only October hunt. My camp was in Kingsbury, so I was in Piscataquis too.Pete44ru wrote: ↑Sun Nov 26, 2017 9:53 am .

The pics above were taken in Brighton, just a couple miles down the road in district 17, Somerset county.
We got caught up in the "windmill fiasco" that destroyed my beloved Kingsbury. We left for Brighton.

Re: Speakin' of moose......
So fun seeing moose anytime you run into them. I have not heard of anyone having their deer hunt
interrupted by a couple of love sick moose. As I have noted before we now have a herd of moose
in our Northeast corner of Oregon that many are getting to see some. I'm hoping I will get to at least
see them in the near future. I'm sure it will be a long time before tags are issued in Oregon.
Nice 94, I hunted with my 1946 94 32 sp this fall, killed a forked horn at close distance. Love hunting
with 94's.

Re: Speakin' of moose......
The interuptions are fairly common here, especially further north.
The rut for moose is gone by now. September is when it happens here. It is best to avoid close encounters at that time.
That particular 94 was my first rifle. My dad bought it for me with his birthday money. It was made in 1960. I have many 94s, but that one will always be special.

Yea, that makes it especially so. My dad and I had 32 specials that looked so much alike it was
difficult to tell them apart. I'd give a lot to have my dad's old one but he sold it in a garage sale
before he died. I was so surprised, I think he was suffering some from memory loss some by
then so I don't think he was thinking exactly right. He bought it right after he came home from
the was, in about 46 I think. Mine I inherited from a great aunt who passed away, it was from
about the same time period, perhaps a bit older. Oh what I would give to have that back, I sold
it during a tight financial time.

Re: Speakin' of moose......
Back in the late '40's a fishing club in Quebec was started,a buddy of mine still belongs to the club, one of the members was an American( he developed the modern hose clamp), was very fond of drink...
The club story goes that one day Joe and his Indian guide were moose hunting and joe would say ' hey Vince mix me one' and he would get a drink passed from the back of the canoe on a paddle. This went on between calling for moose. Finally Joe got a bit irked ( he was 3 sheets to the wind by now)since no moose were coming to the call. He proceeded to knock the birch bark call from Vince's hands and yelled 'THATS NOT HOW TO CALL A MOOSE!' Where upon Joe, at the top of his lungs let out H E R E M O O S E. H E R E M O O S E and low and behold a bull steps out and Joe shoots it!

Daisygordoninc,
So sorry for the loss if the 94's. I have a bunch of 32's also, it's a great cartridge.
OL,
I didn't know they sold the Johnson's out there! Cool. I like their green/black and red/black checked jackets too! Wear em ALL the time, not just hunting.
Gunny,
Reminds me of the guy who went up to The Forks on a moose hunt. Hired himself an old indian guide to get him to good moose country. They get on the back side of Johnson mt. and the indian puts his ear to the ground and says "moose come!" They guy says, "Wow! How can you tell?"
The old indian says, "Wet......sticky"
