Took a Friend Hog Hunting Today
Took a buddy hog hunting today. He hadn't been before and the plan was to try to get him an easy hunt, that wasn't too easy. I wanted to help Dave to get a feel for how to locate hogs and get them to move in your favor.
Went up to the Boar's Nest in Kenefic, OK, a place that CRS turned me on to last year. They've got a good sized meat hog area and plenty of hogs available.
We started out by walking the perimeter of the area just to get the lay of the land and to locate any of several groups of hogs that were wandering around. We spotted a couple of good sized groups and stalked one of them to where we could get a shot. My aim was off so the first hog that I settled on walked away unscathed.
We had Paul from the Boar's Nest get on the 4-wheeler and drive some hogs to us but Dave wasn't comfortable shooting at moving targets. A couple more missed shots for me.
We decided to split up and see if we could influence the hogs to move around the area a bit more and this seemed to work out for us. It wasn't long before I was face-to-face with a 300lb boar that should have been over in the Trophy area. This fellow came running out of the thick and turned when he saw me in front of him. I took a shot on him running at about 10 yards but it was not a good shot and hit hit him toward the hind-quarters. He fell at the shot but got up again. Getting shot upset him quite a bit and he started squealing/screaming loudly and he turned to run toward me. I got a little excited at his turn in my direction because he was so close, and I shot him again with a quartering shot in his right shoulder. He fell and got up again. I shot a 3rd time and put a round in his head at the rear of his jaw. That was a tough hog!
I marked his location back in the woods so that I could guide Paul and the 4-wheeler back to retrieve the hog. It took four of us to get the boar onto the 4-wheeler.
We took the hog over to the skinning rack, and just as we got him off the 4-wheeler we heard a shot in the direction Dave had been hunting, and he had put a 100lb hog down with a round through it's left shoulder.
I was hunting with a Marlin 336RC in .35 Rem and Dave was using an FN FAL in .308. Dave said that he enjoyed himself 90% of the time. There was the part where he tripped over a piece of an old fence and fell down that he said was not that great.
I think it was a good day.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

Looks like a good time, I have a place down around Antlers OK and will be going down this winter and hope to bag 4 or 5 <100lb pigs to bring back to Montana.

.35 Remington stopped at 10yds by his shield! Yes, that was a tough hog.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

I used to daydream about a hog hunt with my 1911...maybe not

That's a day's work, FW. Makes me think I'd be an idiot to hunt anything bigger than 100 pounds with a Winchester 73 in .44 WCF with black powder and cast.

Re: Took a Friend Hog Hunting Today
A buddy of mine shot a 150# hog twice in the shoulder with his 1911( well mine, I built it) and that hog didn't even know he was supposed to die. We spent a couple hours looking for it before one of the gang shot it with an '06 and kilt it.
The hog I shot yielded 222 lbs of meat, 1 300 gr .44 XTP (Ruger carbine)went clean through the lungs, it walked about 15 yds and fell over. BEST pork I've ever had and amazing bacon!!

Very Cool!
I think I'm about due for another hog hunt. There's a couple places in Southern Ohio I've been wanting to check out.

Feral wild hogs, or a game farm?..I've never heard of hog hunting in Ohio.

Game farms. I really don't feel like driving to TX again.

Re: Took a Friend Hog Hunting Today
In this area, game farms or a deer lease are about the only way. It has a lot to do with the high fences and so much pressure on the public land that there isn't a lot of game out on public property. Having been to the Boars Nest, I can vouch for the fact that those hogs are not at all domesticated. I had one which had been hurt in a fight with another hog come after me. I didn't want to kill it, and it could have healed up and grown up into a meat sized hog. I moved away from it while it growled and popped its teeth. Yes, it was growling.

Fred,
Good post and pix. Sterling and I will likely be going back to the Boars Nest before long as he wants another trophy boar;
he shot his last one in the head and messed up the skull and could not have it mounted.
The meat from my 600 pound sow early this year is far from eaten, but I do enjoy watching the hounds chase the boars on the trophy hunts.

We wouldn't want you to get addicted and stay! LOL
I'd offer to pick you up at the airport, but you can just about drive to the Boar's Nest faster than negotiate 2 airports and traffic to and from them
