Yet Another Knife Project
.
In June, I posted about how crafted a handle for a Green River Hunter, passing on the bone scales supplied with the GR blade.

Last week, I spotted a 10" Bowie blade that I liked, decided to utilize the bone scales I had on hand from that project, and bought it.
I won't go through the handle crafting steps again, but here's how it's going (I still have some minor finishing to do).
I'm thinking of adding a 4" brass or copper spline (like below) to the top/rear of the blade (aka: Bowie fighter), but haven't made up my mind yet.
Whatcha think about the spline ?

Wow! Very nice.
While I think the spline works great with the knife below, I think it would be a bit too much for the one above. Maybe shorter and thinner, if at all?

Re: Yet Another Knife Project
I like it without the copper spline. What is the function of the copper spline? Or is it just aesthetics?

I'm not sure, Vall - some period & new "fighting" bowie's have the spline.
I thought aesthetics too, but what also entered my mind was the vintage bowie owners wanted reinforcement against the possibility of hard usage.
Thanks again, folks !

Re: Yet Another Knife Project
The spline was used as a soft defence against other knives in a knife fight. Older bowies will often have a brass section on the back of the blade then a severely curved guard that could catch the other guys knife and lock his blade into your knife. I have heard that it was also a way to dampen the blow to the often brittle spine of your knife so a hard hit did not break your blade, true......dunno.
