Experience with threaded post peeps like the Skinner?
I was wondering if the seemingly course adjustment of a half turn in elevation adjustment was ever a problem. Skinner posts are 8-40 I think from their website. That would be .0125 per half turn. Their technical page notes a 20" barrel Marlin would need an adjustment of .006 per inch at 100 yards. That indicates the POI would change 2" of elevation per half turn. NECG's sight uses 8-64 or almost .008 per half turn, about an inch at 100 yards.
Is this not an issue for setting sights up?
Edit: This not a negative post. I know many folks like the Skinner and XS sights. I'm considering one for a CZ 527.

Being just one inch off at 100 yd. would be nothing for a hunter using open sights. I doubt that 99% of shooters cant even see
That much movement at 100 yd. you will get that much variation between different lots of tha same factory ammo.

Re: Experience with threaded post peeps like the Skinner?
I have a Skinner sight on my Guide Gun. At 100 yards with the smaller peep screwed in, the adjustment is not really an issue. I don't see well enough anymore that half to one inch at 100 yards is all that critical at 100 yards without a scope. I can put a nice grouping at 50 yards and 100, and just pay attention to where it hits with the ammo I will use on that hunt. Taking just one type of ammo on each hunting trip seems to work for me with that guide gun. The .45-70 seems to do well if the shooter will do his part. I have been the weak link more often than the sight has been.

I used the Skinner LoPro peepsight as part of a safety-replacement for one of my Rossi 92's, to bestow a bolt peepsight on the rifle.
In short: N.P. zeroing.
In long: The adjustment distances you're fretting about are well within most shooters, AND rifle's, abilities to hold - especially on a moving game target - and IMHO are not worth worrying about.

Re: Experience with threaded post peeps like the Skinner?
Agree with the above. For a precision target/competition sight, the Skinner would be woefully inadequate, but for a HUNTING or practical-shooting application, NO PROBLEM.
If anything, I'd just ballpark-it close, then figure do I want to be:
a) a bit 'high' at 100 yards, or
b) a bit 'low' at 100 yards....?
Then depending on gun/cartridge/application, I'd make the decision, and consider the rifle either:
a) sighted in at 145 yards, but a bit 'high' at 100 yards, or
b) sighted in at 83 yards, but a bit 'low' at 100 yards.
No problem.
......any rifle I can shoot less than 2 MOA with is likely going to have a SCOPE on it, so I can actually SEE what I'm poking holes in...

They aren't target sights.
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Re: Experience with threaded post peeps like the Skinner?
I've been a target shooter as well as a hunter all my life. I really like shooting accurately.....very accurately. I put a Skinner on a Win/Miroku lever gun and had a bit of difficulty adjusting to the fact that close had to be good enough. It is good enough. It was a hunting gun, and no deer in the world would know it was just shot by a gun that was a half inch off dead center. They're a great sight and with the different apertures available they're great for all light conditions and "Old Eyes". If you're going hunting, get the Skinner.

Re: Experience with threaded post peeps like the Skinner?
Here is some information on sighting errors as put forth by no less than, Col.Townsend Whelen, in his book on reloading, "Why Not Load Your Own," published in 1949 when the use of telescopic sights was a rarity. With normal eyesight, either naturally or corrected by glasses, he found that the following list applied at a distance of 100 yards:
Open Rear Sight: Accuracy is unpredictable due to lighting conditions (shoots away from side lighting, and high for overhead mid-day conditions).
Aperture Rear, Gold or Ivory front: 1.5 -2"
Aperture Rear, Black Post front: 1"
Aperture Rear, Aperture front: 1/2 to 3/4"
2-1/2x Scope: 1/4-1/2"
6x Scope: 1/8" to 1/4"
10x Scope: 1/16" to 1/8"
20x Scope: Practically None.
As you can see from the information above, the ability to sight using a aperture sight exceeds the accuracy of most rifles.

I agree with the boys above......all of my original Lyman and Marbles sights have somewhat coarse threads and I have no problem (well, at least I used to) ....hitting beer cans out to 200 meters.----6

In this case, close enough really is close enough!
I haven't noticed any problem with mine.

The solution seems simple to me. Why not turn it 1/4 turn instead of a half turn?

Re: Experience with threaded post peeps like the Skinner?
It was a few years ago now, but for a B-day gift one year I got 'ol grand poobah a skinner sight for his Marlin 45-70.
No problems putting a zero on at 50 yards. Just a couple camping trips ago my brother and I took 50 yard shots with it. He beat us both, lol. Should have taken pics...
He liked it so much he got one for his Marlin 30-30 as well.

Because you have to be able to see through the peep hole. Therefore, you must turn it in increments of 180 degreesmarlinman93 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2017 9:32 am The solution seems simple to me. Why not turn it 1/4 turn instead of a half turn?

Sounded like a post since the OP said it's an 8-40 "post". So it's not a post, but rather a peep?

Something similar to the link above. It's a peep on a post.

No, not a bit of experience with Skinner rear sights for me Vance. They make nothing for my old guns, except their plain front post that I do like.
