is Rossi still shipping leverguns?
I just looked at Bud's Gun Shop web-site, they are down to 4 models of leverguns (R92) two in .45 Colt and two in .44Mag. There are very few on Gunbroker too. So is Rossi going the way of Winchester, are there import issues? ... :O

Re: is Rossi still shipping leverguns?
Interesting observation. My dealer called them the other day to inquire about availability of a 92 model. He was immediately put on hold, then disconnected, and couldn't get through again! Might be something going on.

Re: is Rossi still shipping leverguns?
Wasn't there a thread a couple months ago saying that Rossi was shutting down its multiple factories and then restarting with one new factory?

Re: is Rossi still shipping leverguns?
Probably because the old factories date back to the 70s and produce less precise work, due to wear in the machinery, and produce at a slower rate.If demand exceeds supply WHY are they shutting down factories?!
A new factory should increase production, and improve quality.
If my assumption is correct, they can put me on the list for a new 24 inch octagonal in 44 magnum / 44 SPL.

Yep, I was told this by a customer service rep. He said this either was occurring or had already occurred. It was taking place in Brazil.gundownunder wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2017 6:16 pmProbably because the old factories date back to the 70s and produce less precise work, due to wear in the machinery, and produce at a slower rate.If demand exceeds supply WHY are they shutting down factories?!

Re: is Rossi still shipping leverguns?
Here is some Rossi history. Here in the USA, for years dating back to 1975 the made in Brazil Rossi 92 was imported by InterArms of Alexandria VA. Before InterArms. From about 1968-74 Garcia Corp. of Washington DC imported Rossi. Before that Firearms International of Washington DC imported Rossi in the mid 1960’s.gundownunder wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2017 6:16 pmProbably because the old factories date back to the 70sIf demand exceeds supply WHY are they shutting down factories?!
Even older than that

InterArms was the first to market the Rossi made 92 as their Puma model. By the late 80's the machines were wearing out so through the 90's Rossi 92’s were really rough. The parts were poorly fitted and then terribly over sprung. Rossi’s philosophy was to make the parts slightly too big then rather than hand fit them, just use excessively heavy springs. This saved many man-hours that keeps the prices low. When you picked up one of these guns even before you loaded it you could tell it was very stiff right out of the box. Because of this, these earlier guns Rossi got a bad rep. But, that is also what got me started re-working these guns in the early 90’s. The CAS game was growing big time but the availability of guns for the game was limited.
About 1999 the owner of InterArms passed away. It is my understanding the heirs didn't care to continue with the operation of InterArms so the stock on hand was sold off at a reduced price. (I bought new Rossi 92's at that time for $190). About that same time period, Rossi sold off their gallery gun, the pump 62 and the revolvers to Taurus, so some folks thought there would be no more Rossi 92's available. I can't tell you how many people ask me what I was going to do now.
About this time, around 2000, Rossi completely re-tooled with all new CNC machines. This new machinery has allowed them to make parts better fitted. There are still some that are over sprung but overall the current guns are much nicer than the pre-2000 92’s. About this same time Navy Arms had started importing the Rossi 92's. Then not long after, the ex-employees of InterArms started up Legacy Sports International (LSI) and began importing the Rossi 92 as their Puma. These were the first to have the ugly bolt top safety. LSI was even in the same building as the old InterArms company there in Alexandria Va. and were using the Puma name as the model name, too. Then and I don't remember exactly, LSI moved to Reno NV.
During the mid to late 90’s, EMF was importing the Armi San Marco Italian made 92's, (ASM's) and had contracted me to do warranty work on those for them. But ASM's QC was so bad EMF ask me to help them decide how the Rossi 92's should be spec-ed for import as there EMF Hartford 92. From about 2000 to 2006 the EMF imported Rossi 92's did not have the ugly safety. From then until 2009 at Rossi's insistence they did have the bolt safety.
About 2009 Taurus acquired Rossi and the 92's and took over the distribution under the Braztech name. Both EMF and LSI lost their deal once the Taurus buyout took place. LSI now carries the Armi Sport/Chiappa 92 but it's still called the Puma Model.
As for the current production or lack of, all I know is rumors. Nothing solid. I was told Taurus has sold off Rossi and the machinery down in San Paulo is being moved. Don't know to who or to where.

Re: is Rossi still shipping leverguns?
Nate,
Very interesting stuff about Rossi. How they EVER made a decent gun with all that going on is a mystery to me. I guess I was one lucky guy to find a used, case colored, octagon barreled, Navy 92, in .45 long colt that had been sent out and slicked up for SASS. It is smooth as glass. I've shown it before, but hey, I had to crow just a little.

Thanks for sharing the Rossi story, Nate.
Re: is Rossi still shipping leverguns?
Thanks for the update on Rossi. Fortunately there are alternatives in terms of 1892 reproductions while Rossi sorts things out.As for the current production or lack of...
Any word on the quality of the recent ASM 1892s?

Re: is Rossi still shipping leverguns?
Sadly no one is as affordable for a decent 1892 as Rossi...
This is my .44/40 carbine. She has been hunting for rabbits to wild pigs to elk, been backpacking over mountains, and canoed rivers and lakes, I have drowned her, dropped her down bluffs, used her as a walking stick, a depth finder in swamps, a balancing pole on wire bridges over roaring rivers in deep bush, she has come on hunting trips, exploring expeditions, searching for lost artifacts in remote mountains, expeditions in cryptozoology, gold prospecting and just wilderness wandering. She has never faulted me, never hesitated, never broken, and despite the rust in bad weather for days, and despite the hard knocks, she is reliable, slick and accurate and ready to go adventuring tomorrow.

Why is your rear sight backwards?

Watch hickock45's 1892 Winchester 357 part 1 and 2. His rear sight is also "backwards". I assumed he too knew what he was doing. I haven't figured it out yet. I have seen several leverguns set up this way intentional or not I do not know.

Re: is Rossi still shipping leverguns?
This came up for discussion a while back here: http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... p?p=722108
One of the responses:
"It's an old trick for compensating for aging eyes and, indeed, you can find many rifles with rear sights either reversed or moved forward. Give it a try; you can always put it back right if it doesn't work for you."
