375 Payne Express in Browning 71.
I am looking for current information on converting my Browning 71 348 Winchester into a 375 Payne (rimmed) Express. I have read older (2011) threads and would like more up to date information on reputable gunsmith(s)/reloading data on completing the conversion. Any drawbacks besides recoil?

Welcome to the forum.
Using Google, I did not find ballistic information on the .375 Payne Express.
So, no answers, but a question.
.375 minus .348 = .027 inch (27 thousandths inch); what great advantage over the current chambering does this provide?
Just asking.

Welcome to the forum, roundshoes !
Pacific Tool & Gauge (PTG) carries rough & finish reamers - http://pacifictoolandgauge.com/37-cal-3 ... eamer.html - which you might need to buy, because most gunsmiths won't have them.
Your rifle will needs be re-bored/rifled to .375" before the chambering.
I would suggest getting the barrel re-bored by Jesse Ocumpaugh ( http://www.35caliber.com/3.html ), since he's about the least expensive, he specializes in .375 wildcats (among other sizes), and his work has been outstanding.
I'd speak with him before buying the reamers, though - because he might already have a set.

Re: 375 Payne Express in Browning 71.
In reading Ackley's books, I found that this cartridge can drive a 300 grain bullet, 2800 fps. out of a 25" barrel. That will provide a lot more downrange energy/ballistics than the standard 348 Winchester cartridge. One of my questions are- what kind of receiver was P.O. using in his testing? If he was using non model 1886 and/or 71 actions, how much would loads have to be decreased to achieve safe internal pressures of a newer generation model 71 receiver?crs wrote: ↑Tue May 23, 2017 10:30 am Welcome to the forum.

I just googled this company and it is located 20 miles from where I live. Thank you for your response.Pete44ru wrote: ↑Tue May 23, 2017 2:04 pm .

Much more common bore size & bullet selections. Maybe a chance to save a worn barrel? Have something different?crs wrote: ↑Tue May 23, 2017 10:30 am Welcome to the forum.

Re: 375 Payne Express in Browning 71.
Interesting - a 300 grain bullet at 2800 fps from Model 71 - the same as my 1886 45-90!
We have taken 300 grain Nosler PP up to 2600 fps and the recoil becomes quite sharp , even with a 10 pound rifle.
With no scope, we backed down to 2200 fps and use the tang sight.
Good luck with your project.

Thank you all for the information/responses. I will keep you informed.
Re: 375 Payne Express in Browning 71.
Back in the day there were a few experimenters using improved 348 cases that had their rims turned down to form rimless cases for use in bolt actions. Many years later Winchester introduced their WSM cartridges that were designed along similar lines (i.e. rimless, reshaped 348 brass). Also, there were a lot of exaggerated velocity claims that were difficult to verify as chronographs weren't widely available.
To make something similar for your B71 I'd look at a rimmed version of a 375 WSM. The difference here is that you might be able to have the chamber cut without having to buy a special reamer and 300WSM dies could be altered or you might be able to buy dies from CH-4D.

Re: 375 Payne Express in Browning 71.
Good morning
If the 375 Payne is just the 348 opened up in diameter I would think there would be little issue doing the transformation.
Last time up north we sent our Winchester 86 (jap) 26" octagon to JES REBORING to get rifled to .512 and chambered to 50 Alaskan. That conversion requires all sorts of modifications due to the case diameter and loading port issues. No regrets doing it all though ! Always wanted an affordable caliber 50 Levergun.

Re: 375 Payne Express in Browning 71.
So, I've been told that 375 Payne Express reamer may be hard to obtain. It was suggested that either 375-348 Scovill or 375-348 Ackley Improved conversion reamers are available. Anybody have any experience/recommendations for either cartridge? Another question. I have saved over 400 (non-shot) 348 brass. Are there expander dies made to efficiently neck-up 348 caliber brass to 375 caliber brass?

Dave Scovill had a write up on the 375 in a Handloader magazine. I'll try to find this weekend, but don't hold your breath. My attention span is fading lately. Todd/3leg

Did you look at the lead I provided earlier ?

The reamer is as hard to find as your wallet & keyboard: http://pacifictoolandgauge.com/37-cal-3 ... eamer.html

I did look earlier. The company who is going to do work is renting and not buying reamer(s).

Dabbling in oddball calibers is not for tightwads. Get ready to shell out for gunsmithing work, dies, brass....

Well 375 Scoville is in a M1895 and based on '06 cartridge. Todd3leggedturtle wrote: ↑Fri Jun 02, 2017 2:23 pm Dave Scovill had a write up on the 375 in a Handloader magazine. I'll try to find this weekend, but don't hold your breath. My attention span is fading lately. Todd/3leg

The 375 Hawk/Scovill is based on the 30/06, but the 375 Scovill is not https://4drentals.com/product/375348-scovill-improved/3leggedturtle wrote: ↑Sat Jun 03, 2017 12:59 pmWell 375 Scoville is in a M1895 and based on '06 cartridge. FWIW: If somebody has an idea/desire for a custom whatever - the dreamer having to buy the needed reamer (whatever) is simply a part of wanting/making/owning a custom rifle.
