An Alternative Knife Sheath
.
I started to think about making a knife sheath from something other than leather (no, not Kydex), and wanted to see how a wooden sheath might work.
Soooooo, I grabbed a boughten blade that I installed a brass cross guard & an Ebony grip onto last year, and a leftover section of a 4"x 3/4" Walnut plank, which I trimmed to size.
I then cut out what would be the strap portion of the wood, to allow that the handle was thicker than the blade.
Then, I marked what would be the insides of the front/back of the blade pouch, prior to inletting them for the blade.
After the fit was right, I glued the front to the back, and removed the wood that wasn't to be part of the sheath.
It was then time to cut out a section of walnut to make a belt loop, and glue it to the back of the sheath.
After I shaped the squared belt loop down & smoothed off the corners, I decided to add an Ebony collar to the throat of the sheath, where the blade would enter.
I then shaved the Ebony down even with the body of the sheath.
A little stain & topcoat finished the sheath (I couldn't resist decorating the face ; ) ).
IDK if I could have gotten away using thinner wood in both the sheath back and/or the "belt loop" - but I might try that next (or, maybe modify this one).

Marvelous craftsmanship!

Thanks, gang - although it was only my first stab at it (pun intended ), if/when I make another, I'll have to figure out a way to make the back thinner w/o sacrificing strength.

1/4" Luan plywood is pretty darn tough. I made a topper for my El Camino out of it. Wish I had the skill to work with wood. Nice idea.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Very nice. Most, if not all, the Nepalese Kukris have a wooden sheath covered with leather, light,
and tough. If you want to get away from the added wood belt loop, you could make a leather frog with attached leather belt loop that the wood knife sheath portion would fit down into.

Very nicely done Pete! A custom sheath for a custom knife! I may have to try that with some presentation grade walnut I have leftover from gun stocks.

I still have one around from 40 years ago I made, for a decent 'Imperial' knife that was cheap maybe because the sheath was plastic. Nice to see someone else use wood; yours looks nicer than mine, which was just a plain wood block.

Very nice! I don't have the patience to do something like that.
