Messed up XTP

Post by jdad »

I'm taking a new shooter out tomorrow and was loading up some .357mags. Crunched a case and couldn't figure what I did wrong. Used the same bullet and it happened again. This is the first XTP that was out of spec I have ever had. I mic'd it and it's the right caliber, but it's 4 thousands short and the cannelure is not to spec either.

The one on the right is out of spec.

Good catch. Did you weigh it?

I have found 9mm 124 gr XTP's that seat to different overal cartridge lengths due to the difference in the ojive shape. My Lee seating plug presses on the ojive rather than the end of the nose/meplat. My RCBS seater die seats them all to the same OAL due to it's design. I have modified the Lee to work the same as the RCBS.

Bullets are formed in several sets of dies so all bullets in a box were not nose formed in the same die. Match grade bullets ,by most company's, are held to greater tollerances than hangun bullets it seems. It pays to be critical of every aspect when
Handloading. I have had no trouble with either .357 or .45 XTP's and I load lots of them.

Hmm, it's .004 shorter but what caused it to crush a case? Is it actually .357? Is it out of round? Send it back to Hornady, they might send you a box on the house!
While working up loads for my Henry 41 I tried Nosler, Sierra and XTP all shot well. I contacted all 3 makers to find velocity range these 210's were designed for. The XTP is out of velocity range @1800! Nosler and Sierra said use them, should work fine on deer. So I'll use the XTPs in my Blackhawk.

This is why... whenever you begin loading a new batch, with ANY new component, bullet, powder lot, primer lot, brass lot... you do a test round and reset all your dies, if needed, and a few test rounds to make sure they feed, function and perform comparable to prior lots.

Same components/recipe I always use. I had already loaded and shot the first 50 out of the box. This was just a "one of" fluke. .004 shorter, correct diameter, but the cannelure was applied wrong.

First fluke .357 XTP I have seen out of the thousands I have loaded.

Case compressed because the cannelure was too high. It crimped below cannelure.
