Re: I Feel Old....
I'm a realist....Old is old....when you start to see people you grew up with dropping over dead or developing cancer, it's just a matter of time for your number to come up. The party is almost over once you get in your sixties.
I've been going to gunclubs regularly for over 40 years. I used to be the young guy there...then I was the averaged aged guy....now, most people are younger than me with very few older. Still a fair amount of guys in their sixties that show up at matches, but for the most part, they are there for the camaraderie or hanging out in the club house. Very few guys over 60 show up for a full day at the range like I do....5 rifles, a couple of handguns, and 500 rounds of ammo. These days I have to push myself for a full 8 hours or so at the gunclub where at one time I could not wait to get there.
It's because when you get old, you get tired more easily and that reaches a point where you just say to yourself, "I've had enough, I'll just stay home and remember how it used to be, maybe putting in a full day once a month when it was once weekly.
A few guys in their early seventies might show up and they shoot 20 rounds and go home.
Yea Blaine, you are old, not real old, but getting there...just like me.---6

Re: I Feel Old....
Not long ago I worked with a guy that started working in the same place just after WW2, then worked at a creamery for 20 years then went to work for a Catapiller dealer painting machines for 27 years then came back in his second retirement to where he started, for another 12-15 years. Yes he was in his mid 80's when he finally succumbed to heart problems. He was always on the go. He always said if I stop working I'll die. He was a good man!
You may be getting on in years, tired and sore but ya gotta keep going.
My Dads recent passing,84 and up until last June he was still going to work 5-6 days a week.

Re: I Feel Old....
Gosh Blaine, I'm a Great Grandpaw. I have all these wonderful guns that need shooting and I only manage a couple times a month to fire a few shots. Wife and I are raising 2 of our Grandkids who we adopted a few years back and that takes a lot of the energy out of an old man. But then I let the 11 year old Granddaughter to fire up a box of 22s last week. Really enjoyed that. I guess that gives me the opportunity to buy another BLR for the new kid.

Age is just a number... until you gotta walk to the mailbox on 70 year old knees.
But I feel fortunate; I got sober when I was 40, so mentally I'm only 30...

Re: I Feel Old....
I don't think continuing to go to work has nothing to do with longevity. I think staying busy does....no matter what you are doing as long as your doing something. Some guys have no hobbies/life so they continue to work.
I retired early because I got sick of the work scene...push..push...push.....younger guys stabbing me in the back to get my seniority. Azzholes on the road riding my azz, always in a hurry.
It's very tempting to fall back into drinking and doing nothing. Those are the guys who die early. I close my eyes when I drive past a beer market or State Store.

Re: I Feel Old....
I have a Montana rancher friend who just turned 90; he has always said he likes hard work. Every morning he begins the day with a mile walk and a 100 yard sprint. He has won the Montana Senior Olympics the past few years in the sprints and ping-pong, maybe other events as well. He loves to go fishing and most mornings after his walk/run you will find him out working at the barn with his son and grandson. On the weekends his great grandson might join them. He is a really funny and kind man--much respected in his small-town community. He has definitely made the most of life. He started out as a teen-ager working for a rancher on the very ranch that he now owns; in addition, he has added several thousand acres to his place---by his hard work. Fine fellow for sure.

Re: I Feel Old....
I have 3 refrigerators @ my place, one in the barn, just to keep my powder dry, 1 in the garage to keep my mechanic's (me) lubricant (beer) cold, the third in the house for foodstuffs... the mechanic has been falling down on the job, the Camaro needing an engine overhaul has been in there for ~10 years; so has the lubricant for that job!
Whereas I used to jump up outta bed in the morning, nowadays, I seem to just manage to roll out... but the feet still get to the floor first. About 18 months (actually closer to 18 years) ago, I had a pretty bad (for me) horse wreck. The wife witnessed it, and told me, "...you're 48 years old, think you're 24 and act like you're 12!" The numbers may have shifted a little higher, but i was still bullet-proof @ 33! It's all in the mind, but early care and genetics don't hurt! Just like Winchesters, hard use with proper maintenance can't ruin one like abuse does!

Re: I Feel Old....
Well, I'm feeling old also. I turned 74 at the end of January, and now I just had knee surgery yesterday for a torn Miniscus. So I'm a bit gimpy and on a walker for a few days. I have been so lucky with no health problems except for a little Gout that this frustrates me. I guess I'm spoiled from being so healthy. God Bless.

Well BlaineG, after reading all of the posts I've decided that you are OLD, Great Great-Uncle... :)

Stay active!
My aunt lived to 99. She stopped playing the organ and singing at church at 94 when she contracted a flesh eating bacterial infection on her leg. That set her back for a year or two, but at 95 or 96, she picked up her paint brushes again and resumed painting which was her lifelong passion.
I have known people that had one foot in the grave at 35. They acted like they were 50+. Embrace every day and do something meaningful to you. The older I get the more that leads me to do things with my family.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Congrads! Longevity is directly tied to heredity. You can help it along or slow it down by a few years by lifestyle choices. On the other hand, you only go around once, you might as well enjoy living your life to the fullest. Don't have any regrets on what you didn't do when it's time for the dirt nap.
