I swapped out the lower tang assembly with one from the early 80's, which I purchased on Ebay. The older assembly is much easier to smooth up and get a decent trigger pull. Here is a link to how one guy did it:

Do a Google search for "Winchester 94 lower tang swap" and you will find much information.

Good Luck!

I'm in the middle of this conversion now. Hopefully sourcing parts this morning. Will let you know how it works out.

It can be done without replacing anything if You can accept the rebounding hammer action.

First, disassemble the lower tang.

Polish everything that contacts or works against anything.
Especially the sides if the hammer and the edges where the mainspring rub.
Make sure the springs in the mortise of the tang are not rubbing against the sides, if they are that will cause a lot of drag.
Just doing this will improve it some.

Next if you feel comfortable going further, use a fine stone and polish the contact edge on the sear, and the shelf on the hammer it works against. Do not change the sear or hammer angle unless when pulling the trigger the hammer actually rocks back farther as the sear moves against the hammer. This tells you the hammer shelf angle is not right and needs to be reset.

I did the trigger pull on my 85 vintage AE Trapper and took it from 5+ pounds down to 3 pounds. A great improvement.

What vintage 94AE do you have? There were different triggers in them. And require different techniques to solve trigger issues.

Yep, the 94AE was produced from about 1983 to present. The X-Bolt safety and tang safety versions are quite different from the early ones. Here are the late Top Eject and Early AE models before the X-Bolt safety:

And here is the 2nd type:

Quite a bit of difference in the trigger/sear/hammer contact... the 2nd pic is from the Winchester parts book from 2005. I believe the parts changes took place above serial #5,000,000. The sear/hammer interface differs as well as the trigger/sear. How you improve the trigger on the 2nd type, I ain't got a clue, I've never done one, but the early ones

Quite a few years ago, I did what Joe Miller described above on an approximately 1991 94AE, made a major and entirely satisfactory improvement to the trigger. :)
