More wringer washing machines

Post by Pitchy »

Bought this Norge washing machine last year and it`s been sitting in the corner in bad shape.
The wheels were all broke loose and it was pretty rusty, so yesterday we dragged it out and fixed her up a bit.
Going to dump a couple buckets of water in it later and see how she works, cool beans huh Six. :)

I haven't seen that model before, Pitchy. A friend keeps an old Maytag with hit-and-miss gas engine tuned up so he can wash the dog beds in it.

my grandma had an electric motor driven one with the manual wringer...i spent more than a few times cranking it... :D

she also did a lot of laundry in a #2 wash tub and used a scrub board...YIKES! what would the women of today say about that?

she was born in OK on a horse ranch in 1900 and lived by the "Old ways".

donw, my Mama, actually my Grandmother, but she raised my older sister and me as her children since I was 3 months old. She was born Jan 22,1897 and the oldest of 11 children. And we had (Daddy finally bought her) a Maytag wringer washer, but she used a #3 washtub to do the same stuff that you were talking about and use the blueing liquid on our blue jeans. You are right about the women today, they were never brought up to work like the old fashioned way. If they were told that they had to wash the old fashioned way there would probably be a divorce. Mamas daughter in law's family used a big old cast iron tub hanging from a metal tripod with a natural gas pipe line from an oil well for heat. All by hand with a stirring stick for the agitator. A lot of work for a 6 person family. You really had a Wash Day all day with the solar powered dryer ( a clothes line). :o

I was brought up with one of those "new fangled" wringer washing machines.

Prior to that my mother used a "copper" fueled by town gas, a concrete set of tubs, clothes props for the line, solar powered of course.

It's amazing the extra time these and other labour saving devices have made available.

Now of course we have the internet, mobile phones and if you are inclined that way, TV.

Your's in the casting shed, Mark

Hmm, looking at these old technological marvels brings back memories of my grandmother doing laundry. Thanks fellas!

But on the other hand the size of the tubs on these gets my brain thinking how to make an extremely large case tumbler!

Pitchster.....cool beans is putting it mildly...I'd say frozen beans on that baby. :D

I stay with Maytag because that's all I know how to work on.......if they break....I did have to put a belt on one ...long time ago.......there's an Amish guy in Lancaster county that rebuilds the rollers.

Maytags are very popular with the Amish.......they buy and convert them to gasoline engines. As they hang their clothes outside on a pulley system ....underclothes and all...you can see they get them mighty clean....never did see a racing strip ......another thing, these people make their own soap...don't know what it is, buts its strong. I bought a few bars of it last year and still have some of it....it's brown and you better not get any in your eyes.----6

I thought it looked like a big vibrating tumbler for cleaning 45/70 brass, just couldn't figure out what the wringer was for.
