When life gives you Ingots, make... truck weights?

Post by Old Ironsights »

My truck is massive. It has giant wheels and can plow through anything.

The only problem is that it weighs 72lbs dry.

And I have to jump a 12" snow curb to get out of my man cave and bog through a lot of muck just to get to pavement.

Image

RO (Rig Otaku) does pretty well in all of the above, but could use some help.

So I added this:

That's 2 milk crates with aprox. 125lbs of WW ingots each.

I figure it should help a little...

OI,
I have always considered you to be one of the most intelligent guys on the board. Ingots? What are you going to do if you have to slam on the brakes?

Maybe because of my Italian genes I'm probably missing something. :D

Why not a half dozen 50 pound bags of sand?

For awhile I had a piece of treadplate that was 4 ft by 6 ft, and so heavy that when leaned against a barn wall and I tipped the top edge out about six inches, it was so heavy I couldn't keep it from falling all the way. I lifted into the bed of the pickup truck using a bulldozer, and my MPG went from 14 or so to 11 or so, but I never had that 'light rear end skidding' thing after that. Plus occasionally I'd let someone see me casually toss a concrete block into the bed area of the then-brand-new truck, just to see their shocked expression...

The anti-snow wrap is a particularly tacky rubber sheeting used to help keep loads from shifting in tractor trailers. Plus there is a truck box between the cab and the lead. (and I regularly tote 5gal Jerry Cans of Diesel in the bed and they rarely move a couple of inches...)

The top speed of this truck is... 110kph... down hill... with a tail wind.

So in practice, flat out and empty, it hits 62mph. (What do you expect from a 660cc 3 cylinder?)

But the neat bit is it insures and licenses like an ATV Quad - but carries more payload and has a genuine practical heated cab.

Since I don't need to haul much (a Mulie weighs what?) it makes a great general/offroad runabout.

The vehicle itself is a pretty standard Japanese "kei" truck. Right hand drive, decent mileage (about 25) with 2wd, 4wd and 4wd Lo. A lot of States license ATVs for On Road use, and these are considered ATVs. Some places that do not license ATVs still buy them for Ranch/Farm trucks.

Google "Kei Trucks" or "Japanese Mini Trucks".

Or better yet, Google "kei truck hunting blind". These things are more customizable than an AR.

They can usually be had for around 1/2 the cost of a new Quad Side-by-side.

I tell ya OI.....I've been casting a whole lot in the last month and I think I've got lead on the brain.

Is this something you drive on the road...you know...like a regular car? I checked out those videos and to me it's a real deal on-the-road vehicle. If so, life expectancy driving that here in the east would be about 40 seconds......geeze, I'm not even gonna sign this post...(shut up Blaine) :D

I wouldn't even consider a Kei Truck anywhere east of Kansas... maybe not east of 105 Deg W Lat.

But they work really well out here in the Intermountain West.

And yes, you can drive them on the road. WY law says "any street, road or highway NOT an Interstate except and unless traversing from owned property to owned property where the Interstate is the only road in between" (or words to that effect).

It's the same Law we have for use of Quad ATVs with a "MPV (Multi-purpose vehicle)" plate.

OK OI...thanks......my thinking comes from the multitude of crazy laws here. Get caught on the road with an ATV or something unlicensed and those gubmint officials will clean out your bank account. Here in Pa. you can drive a scooter on the road but not for me.....these yuppies who are always in a hurry will run you over...even here in semi-farmland.

Now I know why you moved to Wyoming...probably one of most bullshytless states left.---6

That thing looks like a prime candidate for a track kit.
Being small, and I assume fairly light, the floatation gained by tracks would make it a great runner in snow country.
Guys here do it with jeeps and old S10's.

My first truck was a 1981 Chevy K25, 2 wd with a 292 inline 6, 3 on a tree. It was riddled with gremlins! It would go nowhere fast in snow. I borrowed an anvil from a friends dad, it was over 350 lbs. we wrestled that anvil into the bed, tried it up so it was over the rear axle and it helped get some traction.
One day I had to slam on the brakes, the ropes holding it broke and the horn of the anvil punctured the front of the bed, put a big dent in the cab as well! That was the last 2wd truck ever!

Back in High School, I drove my Dad's old 1958 F100 6 cyl 3 on the tree until I saved enough to get my own car. In the winter I put 8 bags of sand in the back end for the weight. That sand was the 50 pound bag of sand blaster sand. The reason for that particular item was that it came in bags that were woven nylon material with plastic inside. Tough and no mess, plus I had access to it from a job. I had to return it when the weather warmed up, but that was a real nice job perk in the Winter.

Figured they must. The bolt pattern probably matches something already out there.

When I was living in Montana and going to college, one of my jobs was delivering newspapers. You are probably thinking a kid on a bike. Nope over 250 papers, and a 70 mile loop. I delivered for the Mntana Standard out of Butte. I had a two wheel Datsun pickup, and way less than half of the driving was on paved roads, so I needed traction in the winter. To receive credit for any unsold papers all they needed back was small section that had the Montana Standard and date ,off the front page. I was supposed to dispose of the rest of the paper. Well if you put several hundred pounds of newspaper in the bed of said Datsun and then wet those suckers down, and the next time it is expected to be above freezing is measured in months....quick, cheap and very effective traction aid. Yeah come spring it was a nasty mess but it was paper so in a patch of woods shoveled it out no biggie.

I used to put a half ton of gravel in the bed. Perfect after it freezes in place, and better load distribution.

You appear to have your weight directly over the rear axle, which, depending on weight and balance in the aircraft sense, could cause a spin, or make one hard to correct. A skating rink type parking lot is a big help sorting it out as you know. But to my eye, that location of that much weight is an invitation to a dance.
