Another Trapper for me UPDATED

Post by HawkCreek »

Some of you may have seen this if you frequent gunbroker like I do. Paid more than I meant to for it but I just couldn't pass it up! A late '79 or early 1980 Wincehster 94 Trapper in .30-30, guess this means I'll have to get busy reloading for .30-30. It will be used and it'll probably end up with a Providence Tool #21 sight on it if Buffalo Arms ever gets them back in stock.

Not my picture, I pulled it from the add.

I sure do like the little Trapper Carbines!

UPDATE

Got her home and tore it down, inside had old dried grease all over but that was easy enough to clean out. Got it oiled up and back together. There is one little hiccup spot when you work the lever and the trigger is a hair stiff so I'll probably tear it back apart this weekend and slick up the internals just a touch. But I have an issue I can't fix so I'll be taking this one into the 'smith.

Can you see it?Image

Little easier to see in this picture.
Image

My dang sights are crooked! Oh well at least they are both crooked and appear to be at the same angle so it shouldn't be to hard of a fix.

I'll probably still take it out and put a few rounds though it this weekend. Right now it's hanging out with the other lever guns getting to know each other and sniffing butts and whatever else carbines do when they are locked in a safe together.

Looks like a great little deer gun, real handy. My grandson got one a few months ago, it's an early angle eject in .45 Colt.

Like I was told when I got my first one... it's "Bark" is fierce... I don't think so, I don't hear any difference between the "Trapper" and standard 20" carbine. Good lookin' Trapper!

HawkCreek,

I traded into one of those little 94 Trappers back in 1980. I still have it and when most of my guns were sold off to pay bills, that is one I kept. I will never willingly part with it.

Mine wears a Williams FP sight since 1981 and still has the original flat top blade front sight. It is an excellent sight combination. And other than a trigger job, the only alteration I've made to it.

What ever you paid for it is unimportant, you'll enjoy it. Very handy little carbine.

Thanks! I didn't expect to win the auction, just threw a bid out there thinking I'd be passed up in the last few hours.

How's he like it? I've got a Miroku 92 in .45, I'm a little disappointed in the overly large chamber mine seems to have but I think some careful hand loading could help that.

I've heard that too and think the same way you do. The last few years I've carried a 16" .308 around the ranch and in my truck. Doesn't seem like it's overly loud to me.

I do enjoy the little carbines! I'll be adding a receiver sight for sure. I'll wring it out, might tear it down and clean up the contact points if it feels like it needs it. I too like the rear peep and flat top front blade sight combination.

Wellllllllll, if you want loud or louder, try this .....
110 gr 30 carbine bullet over a case full of IMR 3031. There was a book load for this back in one of the then current manuals so it's safe.

If you shoot them in daylight, you'll see the flash and you'll hear the crack. If you shoot it at night, well, you'll see the flash once ... after that you'll be flash blind for a while. Oh and at the velocity those bullets are traveling, they spark like Hollywood bullets when they hit stuff.

Lotta fun!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had the same rifle back in the 80's, had issues with it (mis-fired), sent it back to Winchester two times, but that didn't help, so it went down the road in the 90's. I have to ADMIT that I loved the size and weight and the caliber of that trapper--so now I own two REMarlin's 336Y with a 16" barrel in .30WCF, slightly heavier but still a trapper-- HAWKCREEK, GREAT FIND--GREAT CHOICE--ENJOY... :)

I've had one of those little 336Y youth carbines for over a year now. Still havent gotten around to putting a round through it. Tore it apart and cleaned up the internals and added an anodized red follower, fitted a thin Marlin rubber butt pad and started (not finished) a reciever peep sight. HaHa I gotta get off my butt and shoot the dang thing!

HawkCreek,

My trapper had a 6 pound trigger pull. I could not shoot it at all well. Took it to a gunsmith and him set it with a 2.5 pound pull. That was back in 1980 and the pull is still 2.5# after 1000s 0f rounds.

As for the sights that would drive me crazy. To fix that the barrel will have to be re-indexed. Not a job I could do, that's for sure.

The barrel is beyond what I can do too. The problem is the cuts on the bottom of the barrel for the barrel band screws as well as the hole for the magazine cap screw are in the correct alignment. So someway somehow the barrel wasn't turned a full 180 degrees when they machined the dovetail for the sights. Makes me wonder if having a 'smith try to turn the barrel would be worth it. Might be easier just to get a new barrel from the get go.
