Update: I got An AE 94 Carbine With Saddle Ring---W/Picture
I saw one for 450 that kind of tickled me, and they wouldn't come down at all. What do you think? It looked new except for a few minor wood ouchies..... 30wcf.....

Re: $$$$ Advice On An AE 94 Carbine With Saddle Ring
Well.....what caliber?
I have a 94 AE SRC case colored in 44 mag and I would not give up that shooter for anything.
If it's as nice as you say and it's a dirty thirty, , I would think about....
If it's a 357, 44, 45, etc.... that would be in my safe

Wouldn't be a bad price around here in any caliber, but even more other than a .30WCF Wish I'd kept the one I had.

few months ago I passed on a 94 ae for 400 bucks, it was a kid in a candy store syndrome, to many guns & to little money ( private party) I bought a Ruger security six for cheap & was happy for awhile but the 94 was bugging me so I stopped by again & dang if the 94 was gone, well he was in the mood to sell so he dragged out a bunch of stuff like a 30-30 stevens bolt, a 8mm Turkish mauser, 500 rounds of ammo for the 8mm, bullet molds (lyman) lead furnace bout a 1000 rounds of brass, some bullets, primer's a lee pro 1000 press set up for 357 & a few other goodies all for less money than the 94, so I was happy I missed on the 94, if there is a point to all this I forgot it as it takes me forever to
poke out this many words

Re: $$$$ Advice On An AE 94 Carbine With Saddle Ring
you're saying it's a 30 WCF so I'm assuming it's a pre '64. If that's the case I'd say it's worth every penny for sure. Even a post '64 it's a decent buy. IMHO, but then we're spending your money, right?

Re: $$$$ Advice On An AE 94 Carbine With Saddle Ring
Good buy in my opinion--BUY IT! ...remember they haven't made an American made Winchester 94 since 2007. I just picked up another REM-Marlin 336Y "spike-horn" (yute model, 16 1/4" barrel in 30/30) for $386.00...the first one was so nice, smooth action, accurate, and the price was good so I thought it couldn't hurt to have two in my favorite all-time caliber and in a trapper configuration...especially since they may not make these again... :)

I heard someone talk about a poor man's trigger job. Cock the hammer with the gun empty. Then while applying forward pressure on the hammer you squeeze the trigger and allow the hammer to fall. Repeat over and over as much as you care to.

That does help some with a creepy/gritty trigger. I've never had it lessen the pull weight.Rusty wrote:I heard someone talk about a poor man's trigger job. Cock the hammer with the gun empty. It works, burnishes the sear/ trigger surfaces. Doesn't lighten it any just smooths out the rough spots

Nice buy Blaine, I let a 7-30 Waters with a 24" barrel slip by last year for $450 because I didn't have any 7mm bullets. Well it sounded like a good reason at the time. What load you going to use in it?
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Re: Update: I got An AE 94 Carbine With Saddle Ring
You should try a Lee 170gr. FP at 13-1700fps, fun load for busting dirt clad and rocks? Carolina bullets and a few othaers has them fairly cheap. Or I could send you a few to load up.

I'm not thinking too far ahead right at this time, but I might go to a really light weight, and cheap plinker for fooling around. I've got enough serious 170 hunting loads to last a lifetime.... I'm so far behind on GunStuff it's embarrassing....3leggedturtle wrote:You should try a Lee 170gr. FP at 13-1700fps, fun load for busting dirt clad and rocks? Blaine,
Do you cast? If you do a Lyman 311008 or 311016 work very well. First one is plain base, second is gas checked. Both about 120 grains.
If you don't a 100 grain jacketed works well also.
Five grains of Red Dot under the 311008 runs right about 1,400 fps from my guns and shoots into 5/8ths at 50 yards.
Just about any fast pistol powder with a light charge can work with cast or jacketed. They're like an overgrown 22.

Like Catshooter says, cast is the way to go..... you can shoot it all day for pennies with cast bullets.....and not really lose a lot in the velocity sector. Loosen the screws on the barrel bands a turn or two.----6

Looks real nice, Blaine!
Have you hugged your rifle today?
Re: Update: I got An AE 94 Carbine With Saddle Ring---W/Pict
Looks like a good buy to me Blaine. I've got one like it in .44. I even tried it with just the front scope base and a Burris FF3. Works pretty good.

BlaineG --WOW, that looks exactly like the Winchester 94AE 30/30 that I sold back east over twenty years ago. That Winchester has everything that I had on mine, sling swivels, Williams receiver sight, barrel length, rear-sight slot filler, and saddle ring--just can't believe it--NICE FIND... :)
