1 Screw = A Couple Of G's On S&W

Post by Sixgun »

Got some cabin fever today with low temps ...nothing like your Northern guys get but 10-15 keeps me in the house....probably T shirt weather for Pitchy and Old Win......anyway, I jumped in the Jeep and cruised on down to a local gunshop........spied this newly arrived Smith and Wesson Model 29 with the desirable 8 & 3/8" barrel in the showcase for $799.......thought to myself........not a bad price on a 99% Smith. Even though I have a mess of old Smiths I still looked at it........Grips got my heart pumping.....serial number S205XXX put my brain in gear.......the screw under the trigger guard made me pull out the cash.

The counter guys says to me, "you got lots of these, why another?" I says to him," always wanted one with that extra screw"......saying no more.

A very, very nice 4 screw no dash 29 made in 1959. If it had the black wooden case it would have been worth in the middle to upper 3's....so lacking that middle to high 2's.

Well, no more cabin fever for me. :D ----

Measured the throats and a .431 bullet just slips through...this baby is gonna shoot. Gonna give it a light load of Herco tomorrow with a Lyman 429421 sized .431 and see what happens.----6

I don't have that kind of luck!- good for you Six!
Our local chief of police back when carried a 29, 4" as his duty gun. Since he was a friend of the family I kind of knew that gun well. When he passed I was away at school. His widow offered it to my dad but passed on it. Good news though another friend got it so it's still in the 'family'.

Nice one Jack! The serial number on mine is S216K, same barrel length with the original mahogany box and tools. My uncle gave it to me about 15 years ago along with two boxes of shells. One box was missing 12 rounds that he had fired and then put it away. I added the stags about 10 years ago ( the origionals are in the box). It's a real tack driver with a 240 grain jacketed or cast bullet. I had a box of 250 Grain Sierras that it would put one almost on top of the other.
I need to get some better photos.

Well, thank you.......this old fanny burp rolled out of bed in a good and relaxed mood for a change......the change did it. Drank me a biggie coffee, gonna put on my new jeans.......and load up some light loads and see what this baby does. (Can't shoot heavy stuff around here, we are allowed but if complaints come in the township will enact a "no shooting ordnance".)

Jason, I'd like to see the style of the original grips on yours. There were several types of "diamond targets".------6

John,
Smith and Wessons before 1957.....there was a transitional period.....had sideplates with 4 screws and one under the trigger guard to hold the plunger and spring for the cylinder stop. The upper left side plate screw was eliminated around 57 and was replaced with a lip that slid under the frame. The screw under the trigger guard was eliminated .....going out of my head.....about 1960....maybe 61.

These early 44 Magnum guns are really a work of art. The blue and the hand fitting was done by the best of craftsman. A very expensive gun in its day, retailing for $140 which was probably close to three weeks pay for the average guy. In my opinion, Smiths were finely crafted machines until the middle seventies or so when S&W was bought out. Still great guns and excellent shooters but......you know..........very similar to what happened to Winchester after WW1 and then again after WW2 and then again after 1964. We'll, I'm gonna out back and blast a couple of cylinder fills. :D ----6

Loads up 15 rounds with the 250 Lyman 429421 with 6.5 of 231. Nice easy load that averaged 798 fps for 9 rounds. Got the feel of the gun with those nine rounds then fired 6 for accuracy. Can't see as good as I once could but I did have a decent hold off of a sandbag, shooting at a measured 26 yards.

First five went into 2" and as most retarts do, I got excited and blew the 6th shot. I'll load up a mess and head to the gunclub in the next week or so. Yea, it's a keeper.----6

The inside of the box is starting to deteriorate but I've seen a lot of them like that.

I added my K 17 that also has that funny little extra screw. I bought that one at a show when I was about 16.

Jason,
Thanks bud..picture are just fine. It seems our guns...very close in serial numbers....are in the transitional period of when Smith changed from the black box to the mahogany box. I got to read up on that. I know a guy who has a black box but he wants a g for it! Yea, $1,000 for the box. So if that's the original box yours came with, I'll have no trouble finding a mahogany box for mine.

What's the other Smith you have there..with the magnas on it? Oh, I see, you wrote ...a 17...nice. Something about those early Smiths.......makes you all weird inside...almost as much as an early single action Colt.----Jack

If memory serves, my K-22 is a 1952 vintage. It has been re blued, but I did it while in school. I also did action job. Was great fun plinking at pasture poodles at 100 yards.
I need to drag out my 629, been a while since I've shot it.

That's for sure when it comes to the old S&Ws Jack and I sure do love the N frames.

My uncle bought the 29 new in the early 60's after he had shot a friend's Super Black Hawk. He couldn't find the Ruger at the time so he bought the Smith. I still have the gold and black boxes of Browning .44s he gave me with it.
