Brand new lever gun delivered to my door today...

Post by AmBraCol »

Well, it's a lever gun of sorts, has a lever on the right side of the receiver to cycle the action. It's actually a 10 shot revolver as well. :D

It's a Hatsan Nova in 4.5 mm. It's based on the AT44 action, but has a 500 CC bottle instead of the 230 CC of the regular style tube. It's rated at over 1,200 FPS, which is way too hot for a pellet rifle when one desires maximum accuracy. We shall see what we shall see as we wring it out over the coming months.

Nice, is it for iguanas? I've found 850fps is about perfect for accuracy with standard type pellets. Is yours adjustable for velocity? Todd/3leg
Ps, do you know "nova" means, don't go in Spanish? I'm assuming you do..
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

My RWS 350 will do 1200 with light pellets, if memory serves anything under 7.5 grains would go super sonic. I got best accuracy with 8-8.5 grainers. Beman pellets were best.

Nope. No plans for hunting with it at this time. The iguana is endangered in most of Colombia's territory so they run no danger from me. :) This is purely for targets of paper and steel and occasional plinking, etc.

Accuracy often depends on the makeup of the pellet. Soft pellets rarely do well with a heavy blast of air propelling them. Right now I've got some 10.3 gr JSB's loaded in the magazines as they're the heaviest pellets I've got. Haven't been able to chase down any of the 13 + grain yet.

Excuse me while I slip into my pedantic jackass mode. :D In Spanish, "no va" means "it doesn't go". "nova", on the other hand, is used like it is in English. Of course, any opportunity to poke fun at something one doesn't like for any reason is also as common in Spanish as it is in English. Some English examples are: "Found On Road Dead" = FORD "Just Empty Every Pocket" = Jeep "Please Lay Your Money Out Under The Hood" = Plymouth and so on.

STILL haven't had a chance to do more than dry fire a couple of times. We've been as busy as a one armed paper hanger with a dollar watch.

Those 350's are quite the rifles. Just like with 22's, pellet guns tend to favor one brand or weight over another for top accuracy. Many who shoot the magnum PCP rifles like this one have found that the softer pellets don't do that good with full power. I want to run some pellets over the Chronograph before tweaking anything, but my goal is to drop the velocity of whatever pellet seems to do best down to around 900-950 FPS. That range seems to give best accuracy and should provide a bunch of shots between fills.

Yes, it is. It's based on the Hatsan AT44 series. The first ones required the action be removed from the stock to make adjustments. I even saw one video showing how to modify the stock to allow it to be adjusted without doing so. This one came so made from the factory. I need to pick up a long T-handle 4 mm hex wrench to use once I'm through my initial putzing around with it and ready to tweak for accuracy over speed.

If velocity is a problem, these should slow it down. http://www.pyramydair.com/a/Ammo/Airgun ... /pw_grain4

There's not much wild game in abundance in Colombia over all, due to over hunting most places are shot out. About the only thing there's a lot of are doves of various types. There still is SOME game and in some places still plenty due to the unhealthy nature of the guardians of the area (read - rebel forces prone to kidnap/murder outsiders) but around these parts game is few and far between and therefore I simply don't hunt since there are no black and white laws for or against it.

I've looked at those, along with a few others - but have found no importers of them yet. The 10.3- 10.5s are fairly common, but the heavier ones are scarce as hen's teeth. Today a 4mm wrench was properly applied and the chronograph read around 920 FPS at 33 feet for some JSB Exact 8.44's. More testing WILL be done as time allows.

Could pelleta be shipped to you directly from Pyramid Air or and as a gift from an individual? Or is that not allowed. Todd/3leg
Guess I forget how easy it is to get what I want at times.

I don't know if they'd let pellets through or not. Technically (according to the legal document that defines all things gunny in Colombia) they are not ammunition (ammunition is comprised of a shell casing, projectile and propellant - don't recall if they mention the primer or not) but just try to argue with a minimum wage earning customs agent sometime... So I've not tried to bring any in that way. By the time one pays shipping, etc it's easier to simply import them via an importer. Expensive, but they get here. Just have to convince one of the importers to bring me in a can or three of heavy weights instead of the more common light to midweight pellets.
