First Shots

Post by Griff »

After shooting the Leverguns Postal target yesterday morning, the wind came up... so, off to the range I went. (They don't allow standing up, you can only shoot off the bench). And I was sorta anxious to try the new sights on my '66 Centennial and the Sharps... 'sides, the range has some berms that sorta keep the breeze from affecting the bullets too much, unlike my open pasture!

Wow! What a difference! I had at least 3 different loads in my 50 round box of .40-90SBN for the Sharps. 8 rounds of 300 grain RFN (very small flat), in front of 30 grains of 5744; 5 rounds of the same bullet in front of about 76 grains of Goex Cartridge; the balance were 85 grains of Goex "Cartridge" behind the 350grain of the 300 bullet. Same nose, just a longer shank. After the 50 yard exercise in the early am, it really changed at 100 yards.

Still started off way low. as best I can remember they went like this: 1st shot was a Goex load with the 300, bottom edge of the paper, nearly centered. Note to self: ok, that row are the BP rounds! Next shot was the 30 grains of 5744, just off the edge slightly right out of line with the bull. So crank in a little windage, and elevation. 3rd shot in the 6 ring, but 1-¾" left. Back to adjust the sights, move the front to the right, and rear up some more... trying to only move one mark on the staff at a time. Brought the windage back to the right one mark, then shot the bottom of the 8 ring at 5:30. Round #5 went just to left of this one. #6 in the middle of the 9 ring 1" low and ¾" right after moving one mark. Raised the rear, a bit more and apparently overcorrected for as it's 1-1/3 high, put nearly centered... 8th shot, and last of the smokeless went almost directly above that one, (yeah, came home with one smokeless round unfired). Proceeded to fire the 4 remaining 300 gr BP rounds. They are four shots left center of the white bull. (Next trip, I'm taking 5 of each and shooting for group with the same aim point and a spotting pad to aid the memory)! The hunting charge without any correction to the sights, consisted of 5 shots, 3 of which had to have gone low off the paper, then doing that "Kentucky windage" thing, got one in the LL of the 5 ring, and then 0630 in the 7 ring! Next shot was @ the same spot in the 9 ring, then pulled one into the 7 ring @ 0400, and the last shot cut the 9 ring @ 2 o'clock. By then my eyes were tired, and the shoulder sore! Those loads are slightly compressed, I may need to ease off that charge some... I was then holding over the 5 ring @ 12 o'clock! I sorta like how the loosely loaded 300gr loads shot, much, much easier on the shoulder!

Lastly, it was the .30-30's turn... I'd only used the barrel sight @ 50, and flipping up the tang, found that they went high, high, and high some more. Obviously the couple of shots at 50 yards were not indicative of what it'd do at 100, and off a rest! Lowering the Lyman nearly all the way to the bottom of the staff got me back on paper, But then interference problems with the rear factory sight got to me. Eyes tired, decided to sit out the rest of the shooting session and all of the next. Took a break, wandering around the range, (it was packed and a waiting line to get in), and chatted with a neighboring shooter, also shooting a Sharps (a 45-60), had me ready the next relay, and I really concentrated and finally got a string to go into the bottom of the target and experimenting a little of just where to hold, walked 'em up to the last shot in the white center of the bull! Gotta get rid of the rear leaf sight, interferes with the tang and hooded front!

After I do that and insert a dovetail blank, a shooting session for group is next on the agenda.

We were at the Armadillo Gun Shop range yesterday and though it was windy, the berms and baffles kept the wind off the pistol and rifle ranges.
My sixteen year old Grandson, Troupe, shot M18 .22 revolver (75 rounds - some double action), M19 Combat Masterpiece (50 rounds .38 Special(some double action) and 25 rounds .357 mag full house 158 grain) and M39 9mm - 50 rounds. It was his first time to shoot any of these guns and he did quite well. One of the range owners liked him and did a bit of coaching on form and let him shoot his custom 1911 9mm with a 5 inch barrel - sweet shooting piece.

The cute teenage girl at the counter talked me into buying Troupe a teen age membership; maybe she wants him to come back? All in all, a good outing and we did not even shoot the .380 or .44 mag pistols; guess we will have to go back soon. :)

Actually, what I need to do, is back to my old stand-by load and stick with it... insteada experimenting with seating depths, powder charges and such... Those .30-30s were all seated out so they crimped in the front of the top lube groove. But, until groups improve, I guess more experimentin' is necessary!!! :P  It simply can't be that I'm getting older...

Getting older just means you have more experience!

Argggh! Just found out what went wrong at range on Wednesday! Picked up the wrong box of ammo... It was sitting on kitchen table to go back to shop and get the bullets pulled. I'd seated the bullets too deep! Reloaded those twenty shots yesterday, and when I was boxing them... I noticed they were longer than the balance... ~2.48" vs the balance in that box.
Bad on the left, good on the right. You can even see on the right one outside the box, it engages the rifling...
ImageDagnabit! Now, I have to go back to the range and retest all over again!!! :D :D
