At three or four (I can't remember) I had Daughter at the gun range in ear protection. She knew, and understood at a very young age. When She has time, she still likes to go shooting with Dad. She has a beautiful 3" J Frame .38 special, and a nice 9 shot High Standard .22 revolver that I've given her.

Y2K shot a .22 for the first time at... 2 years old. Granted, I held him and the rifle. I wanted him to get used to wearing "eyes and ears", and to not be afraid of the recoil and sound of shooting (almost non-existent in a .22, of course). It all worked in spades. He is very safe - safer than I was at his age - and a recoil junky (like I was when I was young and stupid - and someone else was buying the ammunition! ).

I remember when I was growing up that all my friends who came from households where they had guns, whether the family was in law enforcement, military, and/or hunters, were very safe around firearms. They learned gun safety and respect very early.

The absolutely most dangerous kids where those that came from "gun-free" homes. They had all the intense interest with NONE of the safety instilled in them.
