A wealth of knowledge here

Post by GunnyMack »

So I'm trying to track down a firing pin for a Remington 700 ML. BROWNELLS, nope, GUN PARTS, nada, JACK FIRST, no gots.
I called Remington to try to figure out if it's just a short action 700 FP, no it's proprietary to the 700 ML. The gent at Remington said I should look at Midway, not there either.

Does anyone here possibly know who or where to find one?

Thanks!

Do you have the old broken pin? If so, any good gunsmith can drill it and replace the tip to make it like new again.

I'd suggest you try posting in the "Inline Muzzleloading" forum over at Modern Muzzleloaders (Click here for link).

I come here for the camaraderie and info on leverguns, but that's my "go to" forum for anything related to modern inlines.

Good luck!

I used to have one and have had it apart before. Are you using musket caps, rifle caps,or shotgun primers ? As I recall the pin for caps is a very simple part.
I had some issues with caps not firing in my rifle. I converted to musket caps and had some longer nipples made up.The striker was bottoming out before it smashed the cap enough to ignite it.No more fail to fires after that. My hunting buddy had the same rifle so we ordered enough nipples for both and several spares each.
I sold mine after I bought my Knight Big Horn 24" SS .50 Cal. Washington did not allow shotgun primers, dont know about now.

Gunny,
I realize I'm not much help but back in the old days when a firing pin was broke, we just lined the gun up at the deer and with a 16 penny nail on the cap and then whack it with a 20 oz. Plumb hammer.

Ah, pin is NOT broken, my customer wants to find a spare.
I haven't seen the gun yet, I'm just trying to collect parts before he brings it to me to diagnose/ repair. From what he says the main spring is weak and ignition is spotty at best. I have the spring on the way .

I'll try the muzzle loader forum, THANKS,

Let me tell you bout a story of a man named Jed....

Oh... Wait... Wrong forum...

Ahem

When I was living in the old FRG, I bought a CZ50 from the local Poliezi.

Worked fine for a while but then the cast metal firing pin broke at the weak point.

I tiok said broken pin to a buddy in the Kaserne Tool Shop and he mic'd out and cut me a new one from a scrap of D2.

When I got a second CZ50 I had him make me another.

IIRC I ended up having a couple of bottles of German booze into the transaction (s).

Point is, if you know anyone with a lathe & mill, just get a spare or two made. Firing pins aren't hard to turn/mill and might make someone an interesting project.
