.45 caplock experiment.

Post by Nath »

Tried a dual ball load in my smooth rifle yesterday. It works to beyond 50yds for small game accuracy wise. The load chain is powder, card, oiled leather, ball, another wet leather, ball and a card on top.

Here is some photos.

Interesting, I have had the same smooth bored .45 but I never tried that, they do shoot well for smooth bores... 8)

Nice work, Nath !

There's not many smoothies over here that are smaller than .54cal.

I had a T/C Renegade .56SB that would shoot very good groups with patched pumpkin balls, AND I could use birdshot in 28ga shotcups (with an overshot wad) for birds when the mood struck me.

Those 45's must be HARD on tree rats! I know my 32 sure beat them up if you weren't careful with shot placement!

I second that. I picked up a .32 T/C Maxi mold off the discount table just because. The bullets are cute as heck, but destroy a squill if your shot placement is off at all. Now for coyotes...

I too have a maxiball mould for my 32, was always tempted to try one on a deer.
I used 20-30 grains of powder and a patched RB for tree rats.

Great shooting Nath... The spread on that squill looks like 2nd ball may be over kill :)

The bad rep for the smooth bores accuracy comes from shooting paper cartridges stuffed in Muskets with no sights other than a bayonet lug. People have forgotten that most Dueling Pistols were smooth bores... What gave them their accuracy was PATCHING THE ROUND BALL It should be no surprise accuracy is even better in a long gun with good sights.

At thirty it looks to be less than 2".
The squirrel got one ball, one passed just over the top.

At forty it's a good 3"+.

The only fifty yards shot I had revealed a 4" spread.

All in all not bad, a good fox or coyote load.

The gun is accurate, but that is good shooting on your part, too.
