Got A Weird Quarter Today

Post by Sixgun »

Yea, I know, slow news day........Anyway, after doing a little shopping today (Of course, the gunshop...where else?) I came home and emptied out my pockets and noticed this quarter...it
really stood out. The "heads" is completely normal but the "tails" is all out of focus, smudged, whatever. I have it pictured with an identical Harpers Ferry commemorative quarter.

OK, it might be worth twice its face value. This quarter is spankin' new so it's not wear. Obviously, a bad day at the mint.

Two year old coin. No telling where it has been or what it's been exposed to. I'd bet it was likely attacked chemically.

I am betting misstrike as the edge of the rim is crisp. If it was a decaying process such as a chemical attack, or wear I believe the rim would be the first thing damaged. Just my thoughts, but what do I know, I can't even send a PM.

Seems odd that only one side is obliterated. If it was poorly struck it should affect both sides. Something tells me whatever happened didn't happen at the mint, but after it was in circulation. If so, then it has no added value, since it didn't slip past the mint inspection.

Could be some grease or lube was left on the die? I check some of the coin sites but nothing like what you have has come up yet.

Looks like a capped die strike at the point where the cap is worn thin.
Kind regards,

DEFINITELY check with an expert - might be worth quite a bit. Remember that goofy upside down biplane stamp? It sold immediately for 15 grand in 1918!

Do what Griff said and check with one of them NUMEROLOGIST fellas.

If you are looking for a numerologist, I can dig out a book on the subject in my comparative religion library.

The number 7.62 is your lucky number and it has much import on your future with zombies.

However, a numismatic professional/expert might be pretty helpful in this case.

Fordwannabe said it right......The edge is crisp. You have to see this in person to see that it's a mistrike of some sort. Putting a caliper on the face shows it to be .005 thicker than the coin next to it. It even feels to have a high relief where the "fort" is.mmmmmm. might be worth more than my original aseesssment of .50.....maybe up to $5.00---6

I've tried that before, using a mangled 1930s pure silver dollar.

The results don't look like that.
