Savage 99, worth?

Post by mikld »

I've had a hankerin' for a new gun for a while and I started thinkin' 'bout a Savage 99, I'd prefer a 30 cal. I didn't see one on GunsAmerica for less than $800.00. Is this the going cost for a decent 99? I'm not a hunter I just love guns and reloading for them...

I would suggest a search of LGS's and/or the classifieds of several shooting forum websites for a suitable candidate that will usually be much less expensive than most auction sites.

For example, last Winter, I bought this .303 ( really a .30 cal) Savage Model 1899H for $350 OTD @ a local Cabela's

Oh you can get a nice 99 in 300 Savage for a whole lot less and a 303 Savage for even less than most 300's (and PRVI is making 303 Savage brass so it is once again a viable option). Look on Gunbroker.com and make sure you only pay attention to the ones that were started without a phony reserve and at a reasonable enough price to actually garner some bidding (this eliminates most of them). I just looked over there and if I needed another 300 Savage I would be looking at this one http://www.gunbroker.com/item/604327149 or maybe this one http://www.gunbroker.com/item/605141251 and then add in this one http://www.gunbroker.com/item/605311630 and maybe this one http://www.gunbroker.com/item/604604084 ... there are a nice batch to choose from. All being bid on as we speak so you don't know what it takes to win the bidding but is going to be much much less than $800 I will guarantee you.

Then I think us 300 Savage shooters need to get together for our own shoot one of these fine days. (I'm just across the hill from you in Prineville) I've been loading the little 120 grain Lee bullet ahead of 10 grains of Green Dot powder (just because I have a gob of Green Dot from my shotgun days -- there are much nicer powders out there..) and this is a very pleasant 32/20 level load but it uses a case that is much easier spotted on the ground than those dinky little 32/20 cases.

Hmmm. Only two places that sell used guns in my small town and haven't seen any 99s at all...

FWIW, Hornady & PCI are both commercially offering custom-loaded .303 Savage ammunition now, Hornady's with 150gr JSP boolits of their own make.

Graf & Son's & other vendors sell it online (I bought 2 boxes when I acquired my .303 Model 1899).

800 is too much. Especially, if it doesn't have to be pretty.

Nice Savage 99's in 300 savage can be found for around $500. In fact last year I was at a Cabelas and they had a very good 90% condition 99 in 300 Savage for $550. So they can't bring that much cash if Cabelas sell them at that price. Get on line and check the Cabelas stores , 300 Savages are very reasonable.

Very true, but...with 300 Savages, like a few other calibers, were made in two different time eras.....the non drilled and tapped........and the drilled and tapped......for scopes. If the former was d & t, you can pick them up for a song, usually 2-3 .....nobody with knowledge wants a molested pre war gun so they are valued only as a shooter. Echoing what 6Gun posted, if your are not really knowledgeable/In-The-Know about the Savage M99 and looking for a one, get a reference book!

When I was looking for a .303 Savage M99, I bought Murray's "The Ninety-Nine; A History of the Savage Model 99 Rifle" (3 ed., 1985). Was a great help identifying what I was looking at. The book cost about US$35.00 but saved me quite a bit as it educated me about what I was looking at and looking for.

Pete, that's a great rifle you got for $350. In my experience, there are darned few bargains at Cabela's -- but mebbe that's because you got there before I did.

Here in Pennsylvania, good used 99's run about $550. but they don't spend much time on the used rack. These are very accurate rifles. I took this mule deer in the Black Hills of western South Dakota with my 99 in .308. Distance was about 200 yards from a steady rest.

You didn't have a chance, Bill - since the subject Cabela's is in East Hartford, CT. . ;)

mikld, I just looked at Gunbroker, at those rifles I referenced to see how they went. The first one sold for $430 -- was that you that bought it?

The second one was my mistake -- dang phony reserve thing that I am supposed to ignore.

The third is at $425 with 4 hours to go

And the fourth is at $360 with a bit over a day to go.

As several of us are telling you, if you want a Savage 99 and are willing to watch what they are truly selling for you can get one for a whole lot less that $800, especially for a shooter vs. collector grade.

Someone has a decent one in 308 in the classified section at rugerforum. Make him an offer.

Yes, Yes! And .308 is so much easier to find in bulk than .303 or whatever. My 99C shoots MilSurp just fine for practice &/or Zombies.
