Re: December 7th, 1941
From primarily a Navy family. My grandfather's last ship was the USS Vestal. She was a repair ship tied up along side the USS Arizona on that day. He lost many friends. He had been medically retired earlier in 1941. He managed to get certified fit for duty in late December. The old chiefs took care of their own, and the Navy lost a lot of old chiefs that day.

I took this in 1981. I still remember the oil leaking from the Arizona. Very moving place.

Oil still leaking in 2012 when I saw it. One of the most moving experiences of my life.2ndovc wrote:I took this in 1981. I still remember the oil leaking from the Arizona. Very moving place.

12/7 is my birthday. I never forget. Dad was on a carrier. I've done a lot of research into it.
Kind regards,

I was privileged to see the Arizona Memorial about 12 years ago. Anyone who can visit it and not feel moved is a person without a soul. The feeling of sadness is almost solid there.

Another Navy Family.
My Father was a CPO during WWII and spent a bit over 3 yrs in the Pacific "training Ensigns" as he used to say, before getting home to see Mom again. His brother, (the uncle I was named after) was a Marine Corps pilot out there flying F4U Corsairs. He never came home.
When August rolls around and I hear so many folks whining about Hiroshima and Nagasaki I'm PROUD to advise them that in MY family at least...We still remember Pearl Harbor.
God Bless America and all those who stand watch to protect her.

I'm 77 now (born in '39) so I remember a lot about the war; ration stamps , no tires, and men trying to roll a cigarette with one hand. It irks me to see someone driving a Mitsubishi, the company who brought you the Zero.
Vivid memory of VJ night when Daddy got drunk and slept all night in the yard. Mother was furious with him. A friend brought 2 cases of Olympia, a brand that we never saw in Oklahoma, all the way from California. Wonder how he got the gas for that trip?

Re: December 7th, 1941
My dad was 17, after hearing about it on the radio, he & his next older brother went & joined. His four older half brothers either had farms of their own, or were working Grandpa's. Grandma told me that Dad & his brother were the first to answer the call to arms in our family... that she was aware of... she told stories she'd heard from her mother about her father hiding from the conscriptors (on both sides), during the Civil War... first time I'd heard the phrase "didn't have no dog in that hunt...".
