OT- Anyone have or had a Rem 141 Game Master

Post by WCF3030 »

While purchasing some components yesterday I ventured over to the used rack(which is always more interesting then the new gun rack).
Wedged in between several nice Marlins and Winchesters I spot-ed a "odd" looking rifle.
A Rem 141 in 35 Rem.
I've read online where only 77,000 where made.

So I'm looking for the pros's and con's, experiences.
Thanks.

I believe the 141 has the helical roll in the magazine tube. I've read that it's purpose it to keep the bullet tips of the cartridges off of the primers so that spitzers can be used even though it's a tubular mag. I have never owned one of these but I've admired the look and utility of such a rifle in 35 Rem.

Perhaps someone here can verify that the twist in the tube is for that purpose and that it works as advertised?

rem.141's (and 14's)

Post by natedontgo »

I've got a complete(all calibers)set of these(combining 14's and 141's)and a few spares..The purpose of the helical mag.tube was as stated above. Never heard of a mag.tube.explosion if nearly 60 yrs.of shooting/reading...but have seen speculation that "nothing works perfectly.so why take a chance with spitzers". I have used the 150 rem.factory spitzer ammo in my 35's without incident fttt. suprised to read that only 77,000 141's made, perhaps that was in 35 remmie only??? Nate

The tube works which makes one wonder why it wasn't applied to other tube mag guns. Patents and refusal to pay the royalties? A 14 or 141 is more interesting to me than the later remington pumps.
Sincerely,

Hobie

The tube was the first thing I saw.
That rifle is real tempting....

Years ago, I owned a Remington 141 in 35 when I was stationed with USAF in Michigan. Bought it at a local Pawn Shop for $125. in the 70's. It had the base of the cartridge fitted into the receiver which I found unusual and attractive. The spiral magazine was a mystery to me.

The rifle had a long 24 inch barrel but balanced exceptionally well. It came with a 2.5X Weaver scope that featured a tapered post and thin crosshair. At about 100 yards, I could hit an empty beverage can nearly everytime shooting 200 grain Remington core-lockt ammo. Recoil seemed fairly moderate as I recall, but I wore winter clothing.

I toppled two medium sized bucks and one doe with the rifle. No problems at all with 35 power. But sold it when I rec'd overseas orders. It sold for $125. and I was glad to have hunted with it.

When I came back from overseas, I bought a 760 Gamemaster with basketweave checkering but never hunted with it. Too pretty for the forests and foothills.

They're TANKS! compared to the 740's.

Mine's a "transition" model in .35 Rem. Firest year "`141" production with a "14" barrel, 3 digit S.N.

Price and condition?

"Average" ones around here are tagged $400.00+ usually because of they're "rare"<G>.

Mine wears a Lyman 1-R14 tang sight, the style with the small aperture the flips up and down. Sight's worth half as much as the rifle.<G>

Go ahead and get it, you KNOW you NEED it.

Mere's mine:

A 141 in 30 Remington - it was my grandfather's deer rifle. It's got a weaver 2-7x scope. I keep meaning to shoot it, but haven't had a chance to put together some ammo for it.

I've also got a couple of boxes of old ammo (remington core-lokt kleenbore) with it - does the ammo have any collectible value, or should I just shoot it in memory of gramps?

I'm sick that I didn't get his elk rifle, too - a very nice Win. 71.... He sold it before I knew he was getting rid of it.

I have my Dad's 141 in 32Rem he bought in 1938 when he was 17 years old. It wears a Lyman tang sight. I have a picture of him with a nice 4 point mule deer he killed at 300 yds. He is holding me (6 mo, old) and the 32 resting against the buck. On the back of the picture he had written , "Lester with his pride and joy." I asked him what he was referring to; the deer, the rifle or me? It was his deer rifle until he bought his 760 in 30-06.

WCF3030; Thanks for the link, interesting that Fjestad's 24th is saying that there were a few 141's in 25 rem.made(1936) only...Yes to 32 Rem.but one only and it's a md.14.. Last to get here were the 25;s,then found two within 6 mo. Saw a R-14 Lyman peep sell on evil-Bay recently for $180.17. OUCH, glad I have 2-3 already... Nate

WCF3030: depending upon its condition, if I saw a Rem. 141 in .35, I'd have a friction burn on my hand from pulling out my wallet...

I'm debating its purchase this very minute.
If I don't want it I could post the phone # of the store for someone that did.

I, for one, would love it if a Winchester 65 in 218 Bee had such a feature ... hidden beneath the forearm. The 218 cries out for little pointy bullets.

Of course, this makes the 141 in 25 Remington pretty attractive as well.

I do not own one - my brother in-law does and it is in 35 Rem. the helical tube looks really cool - it was his grandfathers PA deer rifle. Pump rifles are still pretty popular in PA - alot of my deer camp members hunt with pumps - carbines in 30-06. In fact I am known to carry a 7600 carbine at times.

Back to the 141 - I have shot it and it is 100 yard whitetail accurate - it would make a interesting gun to own.

I had the 141's father, the Model 14 in .35 Remington - which was basically a plainer version of the same gun.

Mine was peeped, and was one slick woods-hunting rig, I can tell you that !

They handle like good shotguns.

I'd give my right arm for a Model 14 Carbine in 25 Remington! Anyone willing to part with one?

One of the local shops has a model 14 in 32 Rem for $329. I can't seem to come up with the cash. My neighbor hunts with a 141 in 35 rem. Next to my leverguns they are very mechanicaly cool. Much more than the later rem pumps. But one in 25 Rem would be the sweetest in my opinion.

No 25 Rem.Carbines, and if I find one,I may sell one of my rifles..Although I looked so long for a 14 in 25 Rem.that I finally gave in and bought a Stevens 425 in that caliber, then as stated prev.found 2 mds 14's in about six Mo.starting 10/07..I believe the Stevens is actually a lot rarer.. Nate

I had a 141 .25 Remington back in 1961, bought it from an old man that had quit hunting years before. I had to order ammo from some place in Texas, it was high.I really liked the rifle and shot it alot but found something else and traded it off. Oh well, once again.

I do have a standard Model 14 in 25 Remington. It is a sweet rifle /caliber combo but the carbine version would be the absolute nuts. I also have a two other Model 14 carbines-one in 30 Rem and one in 35 Rem. They're really handy and I love 'em. On another note, if anybody is interested, I am willing to part with a Model 14 rifle(32 Rem) and a Model 141(35 Rem). I'll sell them for a reasonable price. Here's my email address if you want to ask more questions. kaschi@comcast.net Thanks!
