Issue with barrel on SP101...
I noticed that the barrel (3") was slightly overtightened at the factory, to the point that if you look straight down the topstrap/rear sight, the front sight is canting over to the left, although partially still in view.
Would there be a simple solution along the lines of just backing the barrel out a smidge? Or, would that open up the cylinder gap too much?
I'd like to avoid having to send it back to Ruger, but will if I must.

Mine had the same issue when I bought it new. They were very hard to find that first year so I special ordered it sight unseen. A call to Ruger service had a brown truck at my door to take it away on Rugers dime. It was returned to my door in about 10 days with the sight standing proud.

Exactly my experience with a 50th Anniversary Blackhawk. Hmmm...the Ruger lady offered me a return authorization, but didn't say anything about them picking up shipping. Bought the gun new about nine years back. May be that's why...sounds like both of y'all's had been recently purchased. Also, I inquired via email. Maybe a phone call is in order, instead.

RSY, I bought that 50th shooter brand new when they first came out. 2004 IIRC.....There was never a question if they would fix it for me. And, yes, they picked up the shipping. Send me a prepaid mailer, and it came back to my door postage paid. Looked like new. They really gave it a buff up. i would not back it out any or mite spray lead out the gap.sounds like a return is the way. I sent 1 back that had 3 bullets stuck in it from bad reloads and a stupid shooter and they re barreled it for free but he paid 1 way shipping on it.

I'd mark the barrel somewhere, or measure the gap then send it back. Measure it when they return it and see if the just back it out versus headspacing a new barrel on it.

The last one I sent in for repair of a factory issue was a Bisley BlackHawk .41 magnum that was 12 years old but still unfired. The front sight and base was soldered on crooked at the factory.
The lady said "If it was done wrong at the factory they would fix it for free" but since I was not the first owner, I did not expect Ruger to pay shipping and paid to send it in for warranty repairs. It cost me $107.00 to ship UPS second day air.
That gun came back in perfect condition and Ruger did a complete disassembly and totally polished it to the old Super BlackHawk standard and the bluing is absolutly beautiful. Far beyond any blued finish that can be found on any production Ruger today. That $107 was the best investment I have made in a long time. Ruger did pay the return shipping cost.

Your local FFL can ship at a fraction of that cost. You might check with them. A dealer can ship via Priority mail for around $25. At the time my local dealer friend was retiring and closing shop and there were no other dealers that I was in tight with. All that has been corrected.

I sent an older M77 back to Ruger over a front sight issue 2 years ago and they paid the shipping both ways. They emailed a UPS label, I boxed it up and dropped it off.

Are you right handed? The reason I ask is because the most common right handed shooter error is low and left bullet impacts. Left because too much finger on the trigger and low because of a push anticipated the shoot. I know of at least one well know SAA gunsmith that actually sets them up with the left leaning front sight. Could be Ruger is doing some of this as well.RSY wrote:Hell, it shoots fine. As for turning it, sure backing it off a few degrees is not going to open the gap enough to be concerned with. (most Rugers are too tight anyway). Once you turn it and if you feel it's too loose, take it off, clean the threads and use some red loctite on it. You can't shoot it fast enough to generate enough heat to loosen it.

Scott, I'd send it back in a heartbeat - just call their customer service with the details, for them to give you a service order number, and maybe also a pre-paid shipping label (since your problem seems to be a lifetime warranty issue).
It's legal for you to directly send/receive your own firearm for repair, w/o the services of an FFL-holder on your end (Ruger is a manufacturing FFL).
FWIW, I just received back a USED Ruger Single-Six .22 Magnum single-cylinder Old Model, that I had sent to them (New Hampshire) because 2 of the chambers were slightly undersize (probably due to a worn chambering reamer on the production line when it was made), causing hard chambering and drive-out (hammer/drift) extraction.
When I got it back, two weeks after I sent it, I found that Ruger had:
1) Replaced the faulty cylinder with a (fitted) new cylinder
2) Added/fitted/included a 2nd new cylinder in .22LR
AND
3) Returned the original/faulty cylinder for collector purposes (in a "do not use" warning bag)
All at NO CHARGE ! !

Unfortunately, I'm a southpaw. So, that tendency (especially in double-action) is compounded with a left-leaning front. Oh, well...
Yes, it is extremely tight. Not to the point of being hard to close or open. That sounds like my experience with NAA.
I bought a broken NAA Guardian .32 at a gun show back in '98 or so. I knew it was broken when I bought it (cheap).
Packaged it up, sent it to NAA, got a 100% refurbed unit (same SN) back. No charge except for outbound shipping.
Pretty cool IMO.
Tony at Henry was also as cool, yacking with me (a random schmoe) on the phone before taking my order for some Survivor parts.

Call them back and throw a fit. No reason why the customer has to be the QC tech. and eat the cost of shipping for a broken gun.
