FRONT sight riser for Skinner Peeps and others

Post by AJMD429 »

Anyone ever use one of these for the narrow (0.25") front sights on a Marlin 1894...?

The one in question has a Skinner rear sight at its lowest setting, and is shooting 18" high at 50 yards with 240 grain JSP Winchester factory loads.

The current front sight is 0.25" tall from dovetail base to bead.

18" high at 1,800 inches (50 yards) means that the sight needs raised at 1:100 versus the sighting radius of about 22 inches, so the sight needs to be (at least) 0.22" taller. Each 0.01" of sight movement translates to about 0.8" at 50 yards.

I've not found a 1/4" wide sight that is 0.47" or 0.50", and thought about:
  • a) replacing it with a 0.50" tall one that is wider, and filing off the sides flat to fit the 0.25" ramp
    b) replacing the ramp with a wider ramp (if I can find one with holes matching the factory one)
    c) using this riser plus the original 0.25" sight, or
    c) using this riser plus a 0.29" tall one that is 0.25" wide
The last two seem easiest.

The 0.29" one would give a bit of adjustment room for different loads, by bringing impact down about 23 inches instead of the 20 inches I'd get from just using the original 0.25" one.

I'm thinking the sight might look awkwardly tall, but that's probably inevitable - it's either going to have a big tall ramp, a freakishly tall blade, or - a chunky square riser...

Skinner does make a 0.50" Patridge type sight that is 0.25" wide at the dovetail, but the user I'm helping out would do way better with a fiber-optic or gold-bead front sight.

I have had a riser like that for decades, but I put it in my scrounge box shortly after mounting it because it was fugly.

A better solution is the higher front sight required to accommodate ANY top-mounted receiver peepsight.

Williams Gun Sight Co make a .450" tall Firesight with a .250" (1/4") wide base, that should fit your needs, Doc.

I have used Skinners .500" tall front sights on several ocations to get the needed hight. I believe that is the best way to go both for function and looks.

The sight will need to be at least 0.500 to get on-target, and all the ones I see that tall are so wide that 'wings' stick out on either side of the dovetail base on the ramp. I could file them flat, but it would be kind of a hassle, then I'd have to re-blue it as well.

I've never had to put a sight that tall in, but I'm betting the barrel isn't entirely true with the front of the receiver.

My leverguns all wear Williams FP's though, and I think they may adjust lower down than the Skinner's do.

Regardless, I suppose it will look like the front sight on a 7-1/2" big-bore revolver when all is said and done... :D

Likely so. Ive never had to use a taller front sight with Lyman or Williams receiver sight.

I have five rifles with the Williams 5D and the Foolproof. Like the others say, I have never had a front sight problem with the Williams sights.

Yeah - I like to support small-businesses in the firearms/accessory realm, but the Williams FP is low-riding, reasonably compact, and has click-adjustments that are calibrated and repeatable. If this were my rifle, I'd just replace the Skinner with an FP....

I probably won't do that, since they are only $7.00 or so, but I would do that if they were pricey, just to get a feel for the dimensions and so on.
