I was eyeballin' a Tika in .338 Fed a long time ago....I think I got sidetracked with a 1895 Cowboy build I wanted to do.

How much meat is there at the muzzle of the 308 Long Ranger? There's always JES Reboring...

Good Morning
If you give Jes a call ( 541-942-1342 ) he will kindly let you know what he thinks about that rebore. He has done several "Unique" ones for me and so far I have to say his ideas and advice are good. He will not answer the phone but leave your message and he will call back.
My last job is his 405 JES which works just fine in the 336 "rusty bore" I sent him. Needed some ejection port enlargement to eject the 41-444 loaded brass but I knew that was going to be an issue before hand.

When The Long Ranger was announced last year I E-mailed the owner of Henry about one in .338 Marlin and He replied back that that chambering wouldn't happen. All He could say was no. :D .

The .338 Fed chambering would at least make it a viable alternative to a BLR. Would rather have a BLR.than a Henry that is chambered for the same cartridge.

I contacted Henry too about desires for a 338 Fed or 358win
I would think either a no brainer.

Jess would be the best person for that info. Great guy to work with and he has very reasonable pricing.

It would seem to be a good caliber for a levergun. The possibility sounds interesting.

Per a few different reborers, including Jess, the resulting barrel wall thickness for each side of the barrel @ the muzzle AFTER the rebore must be a minimum of .125", so just measure the muzzle OD of your rifle's barrel, then subtract the minimum .125" thickness for both sides of the muzzle (.250") to arrive at the largest safe/acceptable rebore for that particular barrel.

Example: a .600" muzzle OD, minus .250" for the barrel wall, equals .350" as the largest bore size for that barrel.

Ergo:

A rebore to .338" + .250" minimum wall thickness equals a minimum muzzle OD of .588" req'd prior to the rebore.

A rebore to .358" + .250" minimum wall thickness equals a minimum muzzle OD of .608" req'd prior to the rebore.

A rebore to .429" translates to a minimum muzzle OD of .679" req'd prior to the rebore.

A rebore to .458" translates to a minimum muzzle OD of .708" req'd prior to the rebore.

While the .308 sounds great, and I could use it as the excuse needed to get one, I already have a 30-06, and just am not interested on that .308. I am interested in the .338 Federal just due to the larger diameter.

I recently posted my moose kill in BC with my Marlin 338 Marlin Express. It was a 270 yd shot, very effective even at that distance.
It was the 200 gr. Hornady. Marlin has stopped making the 338 rifle, I assume they did not sell well, but I'm not letting go of mine
any time soon. A 338 Henry would be a great move, hope they come up with it.

Can .338 Fed be made by using a die, or would you have to fireform it? Store bought is about a third the price, or less than .358
