Lever Action Jubilee - results
Close to 20 lever gun enthusiasts were on hand for the jubilee.
http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... =1&t=66743
Here are some pics....
It was nice to see Sixgun Jack there along with Cimarron Red. Julian Jammet from France, was vacationing in the US with his wife and was there as well.
the Arena on Saturday
For the high power silhouette course of fire (200M-500M) calibers ranged from a 250-3000 to a .45-70.
The .30-30 was the most popular. The most unusual & interesting rifle was Jack's 1881 Marlin with its long telescopic sight.
You might wonder about the non lever gun to the right. That's Jack's BAR.
Saturday's Jubilee'rs (a few are missing from the photo)
Top score in the scope category was a 28x40. 20x40 was the top score for non scoped leverguns.
Here's Julien with a center hit on the 500M ram. Nice shot Julien!
The rifle is a Teddy Roosevelt Commemorative in .30-30. Teddy would be proud!

Re: Lever Action Jubilee - results
Jack SR. and fellow levergunners,
THAT weekend was a weekend worth living. One of the best and relaxing in a long time. Our very own w30wcf Jack SR. was the ramrod and organizer and what a job he did....to perfection. It was comforting to catch up with the boys from upstate with Jack SR. and Cimarron Red (Gary) taking top honors.
I really got a kick out of conversing with Julian and his wife, Liu......great gal who speaks 3 languages. The couple currently resides in France and WHAT a conversation we had.....talking about what the Europeans think of us and yes, how the Muslims overran France. This couple are very reserved and have 10x the class I do and they did not want to talk harshly about the Muslims in France, only to say that in the beginning the Muslims were treated with open arms and now there's too many of them to do anything about the issues. They also treated the guys to French food at lunchtime on Saturday. They managed to get a hold of a few of my revolvers to which I was so pleased to watch them shoot....be a long time before they get that chance again. Julian had prior experience with handguns and handled the Smith 29 with ease.
Here is the ramrod. Four of us camped out in the clubhouse. The Ridgway Rifle Club is one of the most famous in the US of A....hosting State and National Championships on a regular basis. It's the ONLY club in the US that does the 850, 900, 950, an drew 1000 yard Varmint Benchrest competition.

Another pic of the rifles with Julian on the left and this guy named Cimarron Red on the right who I caught trying to steal the BAR
A pic of Julian's wife, Liu with my 10" model 29 Smith
Another pic of Julian's wife, Liu, with my carry gun...model 642 Smith. This gal is a real doll and fun to talk to, as is her husband...good people.
Jack SR. gave me a whole mess of valuable gunpowder to play with. Some of this powder went OUT of production in 1904. I so excited about this and over the winter I'll have a great write up here using this powder in the original guns they were intended for. THANK YOU JACK SR!
Boy, did I have a mess to clean up when I got home. I shot 692 rounds of center fire ammo.

Six,
I'd've tried to steal that BAR too! Unless I could've gotten my hands on your Marlin.
Looks a great time was had by all.

Looks like lots of fun was had by all. Glad everyone had such a good time. I'd love to have a chance to shoot at a range like that. Thanks for sharing the great photo's from the shoot.

Jack 6,
After seeing that pic you took of me, I said to myself, wow! do I look that bad! Of course, bad light, tired, too pooped to pop, etc.
So I thought I better take a pic of myself today (My first selfie!) just to be sure I still looked somewhat ok....
Thank you for the additional pics and info. Sixgun Jack definitely had fun!...692 rounds worth:D
That might be more than the rest of us put together!
I added a few more pics and info to my post.
Guys,
Here's our hero shooting his derringer at 200M. I guess he thinks it's too easy to hit those steel chickens with a rifle!

Jack Sr.,
I thought you looked great in the first pick you handsome bugger.
Tell the guys the truth on the derringer at 200 yards. After about 10 shots, I never could see any hits at all.
Got me a new toy today......an 11" barreled AR that is baaaaadddd. Has a real deal Colt machine gun upper. Registered as a pistol but shoots like a scoped bolt gun.------6

Thank you for the kind words. I'm looking forward to your tests with those vintage powders.....
Don't forget the test with the 38-40 Hi Speed cartridges. If I had known that they were going got go off with a click- bang, I would have pulled the bullets, and resized the cases, removing the old partly dead primers in the process. I would then probably annealed them just a tad, primed with fresh primers, expanded the case mouths, put the powder back in the cases and replaced the primers. Then reseated the bullets and crimped.
If you want to send some back to me, I would be happy to preform tha above operations and return them to you.

Jack SR,
I did that test the day after I got home. I took three rds, replaced the primers and shot them out of a Marlin 1889. Speeds were 1884, 1901, and 1944. About a 2" group at 50 yards. More testing to come.
The bullets weighed 145 grains----6

Thank you. 1938 Catalog ballistics indicate 2,060 f.p.s. which was probably taken with the powder positioned to the back of the case.
A fellow I knew that worked at the Hodgdon Ballistic lab until he retired in 2006, told me that cartridges were placed into the test chamber by first picking up the cartridge by the base then rotating the wrist so that the cartridge is pointing upward before placing it into the chamber.

Check the pic of Babe Ruth instructing a couple of young boys in the use of the .22 rifle on page 2.
Ballistics are at the back of the catalog.

SR.,
Thank you....remember, there was 17.5 grains of powder so the case was pretty much full. The day I shot them was cool...maybe 60 degrees......the screens on the chrono are at least 8' from the muzzle, and.........drum roll please.....the bore on the 1889 measures .402 and has had 4,382 rounds out of it...since I've had it and it was made in 1891......but....it was not shot much when I got it.........annnnnddddd......that means the bore is mighty smooth so resistance was less than a fresh cut pressure barrel or whatever they used back in the day. I only see a difference of 160 ' or so......plus, they lied a lot in those days.......but.....they still lie a lot today....so.......I'm going to bed......see ya-----6

For my part, it will be the kind of day you remember all your life.
The shooting range is quite unique, and shooting silhouette is really fun. Just as Sixgun was telling, the climax of that day was to discuss and meet people who shares your value and your passion for guns, even if they are from a country and a culture very far from yours.
Thank you all you for having accepted us just as one of yours.
Let’s hope it will last long much more than one day!

Hi Bulldozer,
Welcome to the forum! It was a great couple of days in the company of other lever gun enthusiasts who like to shoot steel targets at extended distances. It was very nice to meet you and your wife there. Glad that you and your wife had a great time. We hope to see you and your wife again in Ridgway sometime in the future.......
