Anyone else have a rifle in 17 WSM?

Post by piller »

About 3 weeks ago I found a Savage in 17 WSM on clearance at the Wal Mart in Waxahachie, TX for a price too low to ignore. I bought it and put an old Bushnell scope on it. I had read a bunch of internet reports on the B Mag rifle and the 17 Winchester Super Magnum. Some good. Some bad. I took it to Alpine gun range in Ft Worth. The first 40 shots were very disappointing. 41 and 42 suddenly decided to make a ragged hole. At round number 48 I had a dime sized ragged hole that I could easily tell at 100 yards was just 1 ragged hole. Out of the 50 round brick, the last 2 shots appeared to go inside of the hole without enlarging it. I still can't post pictures, otherwise I would. My 50 rounds with this gun is looking encouraging.

I too have been watching the reports on the WSM, I hadn't considered buying one just because the accuracy results aren't what I think they should be. But it's encouraging to hear that yours is getting better!

I don't have a 17 WSM, but I did get a 17 Hornet barrel for my Contender Carbine, and really think it has potential. It gets 400 or so more fps so I figure it may be a bit flatter shooting to compensate for my lousy range estimating skills. So far with factory ammo it yields about half an inch groups. First sub-22-caliber gun I've owned.

I have a buddy who buys them scopes them and resells them.I have helped him shoot them in around 8 of the savage and 4 shots and we are in 1 hole at 70 yards about every rifle depending on the scope he puts on.The marlin is just as good in my book but that savage trigger is much better. we did 1 monday and it was cold and he was sick and it took a bit longer .I could not stop shaking and we were in a hurry he had a guy waiting on it.but in the end he was putting them all in the bull cutting holes.I was shaking and did a bit worse then him but all were in the red bull.he gets then from a LGS at a good price 2 or 3 at a time.and they go in a day or 3.and with the 17 scope they put then in the same hole all day long. Not much for looks with the black stocks but that trigger makes up for it.I had 2 marlins and traded 1 off on something i cant remember what it was now but it was unfired with no scope.for the price you can not beat that savage.even the 22 mag is a good shooter 1 hole rifle if you can hold it.

How is that 17 Hornet for fouling? I have a 700 in 17 Remington & I can tell when it's getting fouled, bug hole groups get bigger.

It is a breakopen (Contender carbine), so since it is so easy, I have been passing a boresnake every 20 shots or so, so I haven't run into any fouling.
