Grrrrr!

Post by GunnyMack »

Ah Saturday morning, 5:30 am and out the door to walk 'the girls'. I walk into the 3/16 coated cable that carries my bird feeders.
Turn of my flashlight to find a mess! I knew we had a big bear in the area but I didn't think it was big enough to get my feeders this time!
It destroyed one of the feeders!
Last time the bear(s) got feeders I completely re engineered the set up. I'm not quite 6 foot and I could not reach the feeders with out stretched arm on tippy toes, I figure 9' off the ground.

Years ago I had a bear chew the siding on corner of the house! I called our fish & game folks. They came out to " investigate", they told me I was baiting the bear with my bird feeders and would not bring a culvert trap.

Well I guess my Saturday will be spent fixing the bird feeders- AGAIN!

Now that the sun is up, only 1 feeder is wrecked. Just have to rehang the others.

Dang. We don't have that problem here in south Louisiana. Think I have seen a bear once and heard of a couple more in all my years here.

They can make a mess. :D

We have a lot of them around our cabin in NW Penn. these days. We used to put the leftovers out in the evening to see what happened by. Usually just raccoons but over the last ten years or so we've been having a heck of a lot of black bears around. We set a 4"x4" post in a big flower pot full of concrete and an old skillet on top for the food. The bears just knock it over and help themselves now instead of bustin' stuff up. But we don't put anything out until we leave to head home.

I suppose that would be considered baiting too.

Do electric fences wok...?

If so you could put a hot wire around the feeder.

Once a bear finds the bird feeders they will keep coming back. Just need to pull the bird feeders for a couple weeks and they will stop coming around.

When they show up during daylight I sneak the upstairs window open and toss a pack of fire crackers, only problem is I don't get to the bears reaction since the roof is in the way. Then once they run off I go out and shoot bottle rockets towards them.

Yes they do. They are used a fair bit in the west, even in camps in the back country. Portable units are available.
