Just back from the farm, took my Henry 41 to test velocities with a few different powders.
Best vels were from Lil Gun.
Lil Gun, 22 grains 210 gr JHP 1821 FPS average. Not quite to MAX charge.
H110, 20 grains 210 gr JHP 1574 FPS average.
5744, 19.1 grains 210 JHP 1250 FPS average. Some unburned sticks of powder.
CFE PISTOL 10.0 grains 210 JHP 1313 average.
All shoot good to great groups( scoped).
I had higher hopes for the CFE Pistol...
Also, my NEW chronograph from Caldwell works like a charm through my iPhone! Allows you to save data, figures SD, Worth the 85 bucks from Amazon!

Re: Velocity testing 41 mag
Hornady 8th edition has Lil Gun at 22.2 max for 1300 FPS from a 6" revolver, Henry 20" has added 500 FPS!!
CFE PISTOL loads are right at published vels for pistol length barrels- NO GAIN for lengths!!!
Looking at the book load for H110, I might be able to get 2000!!!

Re: Velocity testing 41 mag
I made the mistake of shooting plated bullets and that caused serious copper fouling.
After many hours scrubbing it has started to behave. Not only fouling minimized but groups shrank dramatically.

Re: Velocity testing 41 mag
It seems like Lil'Gun works wonders in straight-case pistol cartridges... Neat stuff. I plan to use it when I start reloading 454 Casull.

Copper plated lead? Not jacketed, I hope.GunnyMack wrote:I made the mistake of shooting plated bullets and that caused serious copper fouling.

Re: Velocity testing 41 mag
I loaded up Berry plated for sighting in, figured why waste good jacketed stuff... NOW I know better!!!
Just glad I only bought a 100, I'll burn the rest of them through my Blackhawk.
What really impressed me was the 500+ FPS gains with Lilgun over the 20" barrel length. I know you gain with a longer barrel, but didn't expect that much.

Re: Velocity testing 41 mag
So I emailed Hornady back to question their answer for XTP velocity range. They say 1000-1400 FPS. My load is 1800 from the Henry.
They tell me I'm pushing them well past what it is designed for. So I guess I better not shoot a deer that is under my stand or out to 75 yards or so!
But on second thought since the Henry shoots one hole at 50 yards I guess if I head shoot it won't really matter!
