What a website!

Boyd Magers' website has a remarkable collection of anecdotes and information about (apparently) every TV Western that has aired. I thought I had seen at least one episode of them all - but no way.

Because of the information contained here, I ordered a DVD of perhaps one of the best Western series ever aired - "The Dakotas." It was a bit dark, but had great drama, stories, and even character development that was uncommon at the time, with perhaps the exception of "Gunsmoke." Unfortunately, because episode 19 showed a shootout in a church in which the preacher was wounded, public outcry took it off the air immediately following that airing. A bad choice by the producers resulted in a great series' death.

Jack Elam, for instance, is one of the lawmen! And there are stories with some context about his being a reformed gunfighter, but a gunfighter nonetheless. I do not recall ever seeing him portraying a character before that really showed him to be a talented actor, instead of the one-dimensional villain or comedic figure that I have always seen before.

Found several things on youtube search The Dakotas. One I watched was an intro to an episode. Not sure how much more is there, but it looked interesting.

I had discovered that site a couple of weeks back and found it very interesting. Thanks for the mention of "The Dakotas", never saw it and I'll be looking for episodes on utube now. Elam played some of the most despicable villans ever in the westerns.
