Temptation of the Levers: The Awakening.

Post by Panzercat »

Was in the local toy store and happened across two very tempting purchases. The first was a Savage 99 in .308, integral rotary mag. Round barrel, brown wood that would probably clean up nicely. It wasn't pristine. It had definitely seen time in the field. I'd call it about 70% condition-wise, maybe a hair better. Didn't have the opportunity to work the action. Funstore wanted $500. I know next to nothing about values except for the sole example I once owned in worse condition sold only $50 cheaper on the private market. I was tempted, but not as tempted as what I was about to find.

The second was a 1895 26in 45-70 Texan style. Sounds familiar! Unlike mine, it is an original marlin, '97 build. Condition was about 80% maybe a tad higher with no major defects... But it had some curiosities. The stock sights had been removed and replaced with a ghost ring sitting on the back shoulder and a tall blade with white markings (not a skinner). I can see where the previous owner was going with it. The sight picture was ample and elevation finding markedly superior to the standard hardware... But the original hardware was MIA. The action was broken in, which is to say not nearly as rough as my purchase, but the trigger... The trigger was a scary piece of work. It was a clean three pounds and broke like thin glass. Also $500.

Halp. The leverguns tempth me. :?

.

Both prices seem about right, IMHO.

The white line front sight blade on the 1895 is most likely an XS sights product ( www.xssights.com )

Just looked and it appears you're correct. XS sights. So, after market sights ($139) and probably trigger work if I didn't know any better. If I wanted to restore it, the original hardware would probably be easy enough to get, but honestly, that was looking to swap it out on my old rifle anyway.

A plan foments.
