sailing barge history

Post by Grizz »

This is a super great sail aboard a working Thames Barge, sailed by 2 men and a dog.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r785dfa_PKQ

The narrative is decidedly old-school from a man who actually knows what he is talking about, and has some humorous asides for smiles.

I hope all the British brothers have taken the opportunity to sail as pax aboard the now charter fleet of SBs.

For the sailors, note the Skipper's story of Nelson's channel . . . PRICELESS.

ENJOY

Thanks Grizz, I first saw that about forty years ago, I undstand the barge was left to rot but a 1.4. Million pound refit has brought it back to as good as new... :)

Thanks men. I appreciate the input.

That guy has, or had, skills most people aren't aware exist.

Imagine knowing every nuance of every combination of tides, river flow, and wind, and getting the load where it is supposed to go. Without any drama. With no computer but the one between his ears. And no engines.

That don't look like any barges they use here for inter-island commerce. Beautiful vessel, LOVE the gaff rig and red sails! Mahalo for sharing.
