Doc AJ and others who have 45 Colt levers
Does yer rifles/carbines have the oval shaped chamber? If so I have 199 pieces of 45 Colt brass for you cheap. Or can split it up for 2 of you. Todd/3leg they have reloaded 3 times and are Starline.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Re: Doc AJ and others who have 45 Colt levers
Oval chamber???? Mine are on the generous side, but they're both round.
The oval appearance comes from the cartridge sitting in the generous chamber bottom and not having enough pressure to fully expand the case. So they just bulge out on one side. No big deal, just full size them.
Anyway, I have a life time supply of .45 Colt brass so I don't need / want it.

I think Joe's right; I also have plenty of brass - just not enough time to shoot/reload it...J Miller wrote:Oval chamber???? Mine are on the generous side, but they're both round.

Thanks for the offer though. Please feel free to let anyone who needs it have at it though. Always good to share. Starline is good brass.

Re: Doc AJ and others who have 45 Colt levers
If I did own any guns, mind you, at least 20 of them would be chambered in .45 Colt and none of them would have oval chambers.
Re: Doc AJ and others who have 45 Colt levers
If ANYONE can get decent 100 YARD accuracy with MILD LOADS from a modern produced 45 Colt levergun with the standard 1-6 billion twist, I'd like to hear from you. I've experimented at extensive length with dismal results.
Experimenting with several hundred original rifles manufactured from 1873 to the 1920's in many calibers at a time when CNC machining was a dream has produced 2-3"....easily.
Is this contrary to the original meaning of this thread?

Re: Doc AJ and others who have 45 Colt levers
Hello! I'm here. Mine range from 1 in 16 in the Colt SAAs, to 1:18 in the Browning 1885 and the 3 Ubertis. They seem to give acceptable accuracy. If I could see 100 yards anymore I'd tell you what they shot. But, at 25 yards. Each will put 5 bullets touching... and no discernable jaggedness. Maybe I'll have Ricky shoot 'em for groups... he can see better than me!Sixgun wrote:If ANYONE can get decent 100 YARD accuracy with MILD LOADS from a modern produced 45 Colt levergun with the standard 1-6 billion twist, I'd like to hear from you. Have you tried bullets over .451 diameter? Are they seated out to touch the lands?

Re: Doc AJ and others who have 45 Colt levers
Ok Griff, you gots me boiling now!!! Well over 212!!!! I said "1-6billion twist"!!!! Yea, I got Rugers
and Colts that shoot like the Obamas meow but not the leverguns with 1-36 and 454 groove dia.
I did get so-so accuracy with 200 Lyman swc....but who want this bullet weight in the mighty 45 LONG Colt?????? Even then it was 3"@50. Big deal....all of my Colt Lightnings will do that easily at 100.
There! Put THAT under the hood of the Black Rose!----

Re: Doc AJ and others who have 45 Colt levers
Long, long ago, Far, far away .... at a gun range north of Phx, AZ, I shot some nice 2" to 2.5" groups at 100 yards with my 94AE Trapper .45 Colt. I'm pretty sure it has the 1 in 38" twist. The load was my usual; 9.0 grs Unique under a 268 gr K-SWC cast from wheel weights, sized .454".
Now, like Griff, I can't see 100 yds or the sights so who knows.

Of not, an aperture on your glasses can help greatly.
If that fails......use a scope.....

Re: Doc AJ and others who have 45 Colt levers
I didn't shoot weak loads out of this Puma 45. There was a Topic on the Puma chambers in 45 Colt awhile back. I also shot some of Paco's loads to. Anyways I have no further use for the brass.

Re: Doc AJ and others who have 45 Colt levers
I have catalogs for Winchester from 2001 to 2016, the mdl 94AE in 45 Colt are all listed with a twist of 1 in 26". If I recall my theory right, to stabilize heavy bullets you'd need to push them faster than might be prudent. Ergo, such a twist "should" stabilize a lighter pill at slower velocities.

It's equipped with a steel Lyman 66A. That sight has been on there for a long time. But my eyes have changed a lot over the years and I haven't had that Trapper to the range in a lot of years.
So we'll see. New glasses are in my future as well.
Scope it .................. ARRRGGGHHHHH, no chance in hell that will happen.

I lost all my catalogs last year in the move, but I'm pretty sure the originals were 1 in 38" twist. I seem to remember Win changing it somewhere in there.
I could be wrong, but I have used the tight patch on a rotating cleaning rod to measure the twist and it came out 1-38".
........................................................................
I think accuracy in these .45 Colt lever guns is as much dependent on bullet diameter vs grove diameter as it does bullet weight and velocity. What I do know positively is that every lever gun I've owned in .45 Colt has shot better with .454" or larger bullets regardless of their weight.
