My FIL has passed
Murphy, of “Murphy’s Law” fame, is one mean ***.
My father-in-law passed today at 4:38pm EST in his home in Dellroy, Ohio. I thank you all for your prayers, as requested here earlier (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=66216). I know they were of comfort to him and the family in his last hours.
Why Murphy’s Law? We drove up there Thursday, trying to avoid some of the holiday traffic. We got stuck in stand-still traffic three times; it was a brutal drive. Still, we got in with enough time to see him that evening. He was in very bad shape. Over the next days we stayed to be with him, trying to give him and the family comfort, saying our goodbyes, and telling him it was okay to go. We left Sunday afternoon, knowing it could be any day, or a week, but not much more. Sure enough, less than 24 hours after we got home, he passed. Murphy!
My father-in-law, Alfred “Al” David Otte, was a very good man. We was funny, kind-hearted, and patriotic. He always helped anyone around him. He lived a good and productive life. During the blizzard of ’78, he took his back-hoe and delivered groceries to all those around him, then delivered firewood, as many were without power for 2 weeks.
He served honorably in the “Forgotten War” – the Korean War, and was a member of the VFW and American Legion. I don't think it was a coincidence that he passed away on Independence Day - I think he fought on to get to this day.
He was an accountant by trade, but did many different things. He was a private pilot, owned an excavation business, a tree farm, and retired into buying and running saw mills, cutting timber for the Amish in that area of rural Ohio. He helped his son build a log cabin home on a piece of his property that he gave him, using trees his father had planted as a boy.
He is survived by his second wife, Marilyn (his first wife, Iris, preceded him in death 30 years ago), his four children, three with spouses, nine grandchildren, and 1 great grandson with another almost here. He was one of 13 children, four of whom remain (Dick, Jean, Rita, and Barbie), the others with his parents having preceded him. He had countless nephews, nieces, cousins, kin, step-kin, and friends. He will be missed by all.
Godspeed Alfie. Thank you for showing us an example of how a man should live.

That right there says a lot...He helped his son build a log cabin home on a piece of his property that he gave him, using trees his father had planted as a boy.
You should be flattered your wife picked you to share her life with, with a dad that set the bar so high.
Prayers up for your wife and her family to honor his memory and follow his example in their lives.

THE JOURNEY HOME
There's a path that leads to a turn in the road
and we each must travel there, where the father
waits to take us home in the shelter of his care....
Where happiness, peace and joy replace the tears
and pain, and our loved ones rest in the in the
arms of God to sweetly live again.
Amen!

Jay, sorry to hear about your FIL. It was good to be able to say goodbye though. Went through the same thing with my mother earlier this year.

What a legacy! What a man.
History and local lore preserve the deeds of those who are doers.
The hearts of families carry the good works of those who are givers.
Clearly, you father-in-law will be remembered in both ways.
Blessings to you, your wife and the loved ones whose lives were touched by Mr. Otte. And my prayers are for those who grieve; that their sorrow will turn to celebration as they remember why he is missed.
