Scoping a 94 44 Mag (ancient article)

Post by J Miller »

Sixguns thread on scoping an antique leverguns jogged my memory a bit so I thought I'd ask.
I didn't want to hijack his thread.

When I was in high school, way back when (<1970) I read an article in a gun magazine about putting a scope on a then new Winchester 94 carbine chambered for 44 Mag. The scope mount used the rear sight dovetail and well, there's were I'm not remembering. The scope used was a long eye relief scope that mounted on the mount forward of the receiver.

Can anyone remember which gun mag did that article? I used to have have some 40 years of gun mags but I lost them all last year when we moved. There was just no room to pack the boxes, so they stayed behind. Probably got tossed :( :x

Joe,
Relax......You ain't hijacking no ones thread........these things don't belong to anyone.

I do remember something like that back in the day. My hypothesis is that it worked pretty much the same way as this Parsons scope mount does. It's pretty much a no brainer to use the rear dovetail mount and a screw hole of the left side of the receiver but back in the day there was no picatinny rail system or however you spell that word so it was a straight rail with holes.

With Marlins, it's also a no brainer to just d&t the top of the receiver for a solid mount on any recoiling rifles.

I'm getting ready to do what 47% of the nations population does....pay no taxes :D and I'll have plenty of time to play with this. I already figured it's a no brainer to extend the mount to reach the further on the barrel dovetail on the rifles vs. carbines The heavier recoiling cartridges may present an issue as longer length = instability. I'm presently playing with 25-20/32-20 rifles but I'm also planning on the 38-40/44-40 with mid range loads.

One thing about guns that keeps it all interesting......no matter how old you get you never figure it out 100%....unless of course, your smart like Griff. :D ------6
