BIG chunks of aluminum...?

Post by AJMD429 »

Just passed a semi with three cylinders of what looked like aluminum, drum-shaped maybe 30-36" diameter and six feet long. Is that what a factory would but to make engine blocks or something...? Never saw chunks that size of any metal before, just sheets, tubes, or rods.

Those are what a foundry would buy to melt down. They then could be used for cast aluminum parts, or go to a sheet mill to roll out into aluminum sheet of all gauges. Maybe even aluminum foil.

Yup, or even extruded into any shape imaginable. You may see it again in a different shape.

Probably headed for Cummins or Subaru or whoever for making big stuff, but hopefully they are headed to Bushmaster or someplace like that - probably a whole year's production of AR receivers in one of those billets...!
