Short nosed bullets and feeding in a Win 94?

Post by Canuck Bob »

I asked this once before but can't find the thread after much searching. My 1950s 94 32 Special is tight and with a fine bore. I am always interested in the threads about low weight bullet loading for 30-30 and 32 Special. Some report feeding issues with short nosed bullets and some do not. With a soupcan bullet or something similar what is your experience with feeding short nosed bullets, please?

Bob,

I've never had a Win 94 in 32 Win Spcl, but I've had lots of 30-30s. I've loaded the old Speer 100 Plinker a lot. And I've loaded the 110gr bullets intended for the 30 Carbine too.
None of the 94s I've shot them through gave any trouble feeding them from the mag into the chamber. All functioned fine.
Although when shooting them from my 16" Trapper, the 30 Carbine bullets over a case of 3031 gives a ginormous muzzle flash at night and makes the bullets spark on rocks like the Hollyweird squibs.

Most 94s in good repair will feed shorter than normal bullets without trouble. The guide rails control bullet movement from the carrier into the chamber, and the tab on the front of the link stops bullets in the magazine from trying to jump on the carrier until the action is closed. Extra long bullets is usually a different story, as enough of the bullet has to enter the action to allow the bullet nose to clear the magazine hole as the carrier rises.

We have two Winchester 94s in 30-30, one 1976 and one 1980 manufacture dates. The '76 feeds short bullets just fine but the '80 appears to be dropping the lifter too early and the bullet doesn't get into the chamber as the lifter falls away. This happens with a 93 gr Lee RN design as well as an NOE 311008. I can seat the NOE bullet out far enough to get away from the problem but no way that will happen with the little Lee. Granted, I could single load them and I could live with that if both guns did it.

Any suggestions of what might be making the difference and what could be done to cure it?
