Pre-64 mod 94 - rear sight removal

Post by jsimmons »

I've been trying for a couple of days to remove the rear sight on a pre-64 Model 94, and it simply won't budge. I'm trying to drift it out from left-to-right, and I'm whackin it pretty good. How hard should these things be to remove?

BTW, the front sight came out REAL easy.

They can be quite hard. Have you soaked the area in a good cleaner/lubricant?

Hint.....a heavier hammer drives better than a light one.
No brag...I've driven off hundreds of sights from guns that are 140 years old and rusty.....

Unless there is bona fide extremely heavy crusty rust that has absolutely welded the sight to the gun, it will come off....without a lot of intelligent banging.

Your slightly intimidated by little experience.....we have all been there......use a brass drift from about anything....preferably 1/4" or larger and not much longer than 2-3".......hold tightly towards the bottom of the part you are whacking...and simply put..whack it. I like at least a 16 oz hammer for such things.-----6

.

It's very important that the barrel be secured from moving when the sight is drifted - I ensure it is via clamping the receiver in the padded jaws of a bench vise, but those w/o access to a vise can usually get by on a sturdy kitchen table/counter, assisted by a 2nd party with hands strong enough to keep the rifle from moving (which movement diffuses the hammer blows).

Use at least a 12oz hammer (16oz is better) to drift the sight (lighter hammer's will usually mar the sight w/o moving it) - and smack it like it owes you money (love taps will do more damage).

Didja get 'er off yet? I usually lay the rifle on it's side and support the barrel with wood blocks immediately fore and aft of the sight and tap it right out. Never had trouble getting them out that way, even old ones.
Have you hugged your rifle today?
